Flat and fast but lots of potholes too

I came to this race based on the fast times people in my running group had run at this course and I was not disappointed. I ended up getting a 10 second PR so mission accomplished there. The race itself has a lot going for itself. First off, the packet pickup was very easy. It was at the Convention Center which is right across from where the race would start. A really cool part of the expo was the fact that Olympic Gold Medalist in the 1500 meter Cole Hocker was there. I got a picture with him after his talk and I got a picture with him at the finish line the next day too with my race medal. The race hotels are almost all right by the start/finish line too which is very convenient. Race morning was alright. They needed some more bathrooms at the start, but the Convention Center was open to stay warm right up until race time which was great. I dropped my bag and walked a short distance to the start line. The race start was just ok. They definitely need to break up the runners in to more corrals. For example, Corral A was runners under 3:10 I think. That was way too many people. I ran a 2:49 which means people 20 minutes slower are in the same area. Also, the streets were too narrow for that many people running out that fast. I almost got knocked over twice in the first mile, and there were lots of turns early in the race with a crowded area to run in. That desperately needs to be fixed. The course itself was alright. It had better crowd support than Toledo and Carmel, but definitely not better than Columbus (at least for the first half there). There were way too many turns the first 6-8 miles, but after that, there were a lot of straight roads. The biggest issue was the amount of potholes and cracks everywhere. I felt like there was never a time I could look up because I might twist my ankle. The roads were one of the worst I have run in and this was my 29th marathon. My only other comment about the course was there is kind of a dead spot of fans where you really need them from mile 20-24. The finish was back downtown again and it was nice but nothing great. The finish line area was a little more congested and crowded than other races I have attended. The race medal was a quality medal and they give you a winter hat at the finish as well which is cool. There was also some nice gear available at the finish line but most of the runner sizes were not available. Overall this race gets a big thumbs up. At the end of the day, the most important thing is having a flat and fast course and this definitely has that. It is also part of the Abbott World Marathon Age Group qualifiers. Sadly I missed getting my time by 92 seconds. Overall, a quality race.

Flat course and well organized!

This was state number 40 and I was most pleased with this race! To start, logistics are easy with plenty of motels near the race area. There is no need to rent a car. I stayed at the Sheraton City Center which was within a short walking distance to the start/finish line, expo and many restaurants. The expo was a good size and since it was after Halloween, many vendors had candy at their booths! Bib pick up was well organized. The only down piece was the quality of the race tech shirt that was given out. It was so cheap that you could see right through it! The course is mostly flat and had way more crowd support than I expected. I enjoyed running past the city landmarks and through neighborhoods where folks were giving out drinks and more candy! The one draw back was a number of roads that had pot holes and cracks. The course is almost entirely on asphalt which I like over concrete. Plenty of aid stations and 3 Gu stops, which is unusual. One aid stop ran out of cups and folks were drinking from the same water pitcher, not very sanitary! The finish area was well organized and they gave you a knit cap as well as a bag to carry food items. I will note they gave you water in a can which tasted awful! The pizza was being restocked when I finished so I did not wait for it. Results were quickly available and the medal was nice, gold color for marathoners and silver for the half. There were plenty of places to see/visit in Indianapolis, even an NFL game the next day! I ate at the Old Spaghetti Factory, St Elmo's, Yard House and Shapiro's Deli. All excellent! Great ice cream at the Chocolate Cafe! I highly recommend this fun race and would do it again!

Great race-need more bathrooms before race

Great race-need more bathrooms available before start of race. Beginning and end of race very congested! Spectators need to not be in or around corrals because runners cannot get in corrals. Also, at the end of race runners cannot get out of the chute because spectators are blocking trying to get in. Need more organization.

Free for all at the start

The congestion at the start was dangerous. I was nearly knocked down twice in the first mile. I had to come to a complete stop two other times. I've run the race several times before, but this year was probably my last. The course is good. The fans are good (much of the time). The swag is good. But they desperately need to get the start under control, before people get knocked down and trampled.

Oh the road surface!

It's been severals years since I've ran Monumental, but this time the poor quality of the road surfaces really stood out to me; lots of cracks, fissures, holes, you name it. I'd rather focus on just running, or enjoying the scenery, than constantly looking at the road trying to find a smoother line. Aid stations seemed more difficult too, another first for me. It would be nice if they had a person 50-100 m in front of the aid stations shouting 'aid station/water just ahead,' or have the pacers shout it. They also could have spaced the tables out a little more. You know how most people want to get their drink from the first table and that's really where the congestion is, so I like to go toward the end of the aid station. Well, a couple times I missed a drink because the aid station was so compressed with maybe only 2 tables. To be fair, these are minor criticisms and neither one impeded my performance, but they were notable vis-a-vis all the other marathons I've ran. One the positive side, the crowd support was exceptional.

Overall well done event!

Indianapolis marathon B overall grade lots of turns at start and lousy roads, otherwise beautiful fast course, good aid stations and volunteers. Nice shirt and medals. City has really cleaned up since last visit 8 years ago. Recommend as an alternative to Chicago. Easy to spectate for family friends. Nice job indy.

Excellent race without big city hassles

I've run Monumental seven times now and it's a favorite. You get the 'big time marathon' feel without the big city traffic or hassles. Indy is very easy to get around...I booked a parking spot in an underground lot just 100m from the finish line and only 300m from the start corrals. Flat course with usually cool weather. A winner.

Excellent race that's worth travelling to

Pros: -Downtown Indy is very walkable. Everything you need is right there in the downtown area and there is no need for a rental car. There are many hotels that are super close to the start and finish, and there are tons of restaurants downtown to eat at. (There's also a Whole Foods downtown that we swung by for some grubbage.) -The Colts were in town and playing on Thursday night...we had a great time watching the game at Lucas Oil Stadium during our time in Indy! -The expo is also downtown, and very close to the hotels. It was an easy walk to get to the convention center, and once inside the wide variety of vendors was great. -Start line organization was very well done. Bag drop-off and starting corrals were easy as pie. -Course aid stations were well manned and well stocked. -Between miles 19-21 they had trivia questions and answers posted on signs on the side of the course. This was a really helpful distraction, and was also a cool way to learn some fun Indiana trivia. -Weather was perfect for the race. After I finished it was really nice to grab a slice of pizza and sit in the sun on the grass of the capital grounds and enjoy the race-day atmosphere as others finished their race. Cons: -There were plenty of intersections on the course that did not have anyone directing traffic. It always makes me nervous when cars try to navigate through runners without anybody there to direct them. -There were a couple spots on the course where traffic was right next to the runners. It would have been better if they had closed down an additional lane to provide a buffer. -The race t-shirt was really ugly. I won't ever wear it, but fortunately they had a good selection of race apparel at the expo, so I was able to get a shirt that I'll actually wear. One final comment is that I wonder why they can't have the start of the race at Monument Circle? Starting at the capital is nice, but Indy is known for Monument Circle and that is it's most famous landmark. I always buy a start-line picture of the marathons that I run, and having a sea of 15,000 people lined-up on Meridian St with the monument in the background would make for a very memorable picture indeed. Just a thought... Overall the Indianapolis Marathon is a race worth doing, and there's plenty to see and do in Indy to make a long weekend out of it. You won't be disappointed.

This is a top-notch marathon

I highly recommend this marathon for a variety of reasons: Course Very flat overall and much of the course is quite scenic. I enjoyed how it doesn't duplicate any terrain. This aspect alone sets it apart from the vast majority of marathons. My total distance ended up being about 0.6 mile too long. Congestion during the first 3 miles caused about half of my overall "overage". Recommendation: If you're serious about achieving a certain time, get in your corral early and make sure that you're at the front of your "wave". It's quite congested at the start but this is the case for any large marathon. Weather Couldn't have been any better! The race is at the perfect time of the year. It was 30 degrees at the start and around 47 degrees at the finish. Organization They clearly have a seasoned team running this event. I had no issues except I couldn't find my pace group. Apparently, my pace group leader arrived late or didn't hold up the sign like all of the other pace groups. Crowd Support While its certainly not Chicago or NYC, crowd support was good and there were a lot of fun/festive spots along the course. Destination Indianapolis is an underrated city. Its clean and has a lot of good restaurants. The core downtown area is very walkable. In summary, I hope to participate again. Kudos to the city for putting on a fantastic event!

Poor On Course Planning

This was my 59th marathon.I don't care about medals, crowds, expo or shirts, only ORGANIZATION on the course. I'm a midpacker, so it was surprising to hear they were out of Gatorade at the 10 mile and following aid station. A race this large needs more portos on the course. Having only 3 available every 2ish miles had many folks waiting, I waited over 5 minutes to use one around mile 15. Otherwise, this was a perfectly adequate race, but not one I would run again.

My first family marathon

This was my ninth marathon and the first one I ran with my wife and oldest daughter. It has been the most exciting to be able to share with them. Enjoy the race a lot. Although it is not very large

Better than average fall marathon

This was my 31st marathon in my 22nd state. I found the course to be mostly flat; the few hills were more grades than actual hills. However, with a 28 degree, 20 degree wind chill at the start and not much warmer at the finish, it was chilly. I dressed right, so I was comfortable throughout, but the headwind in the second half was tough. I hit my BQ by 40 seconds, but it was a struggle. The start was clogged, but it helped keep me warm, so it was a mixed bag. Too many slow runners snuck into the first 2 corrals, so some enforcement could help. The road surface wasn't great for many areas in the race. The course seemed to hit most of the better parts of town, and I don't recall running through any seedy areas, but I wouldn't exactly call Indianapolis scenic. I can't remember a race with as many water/Gatorade stops, and the volunteers were great, as most knew to balance the cups on their hands so I didn't have any mishaps like at so many races where volunteers wind up either holding onto the cups or dropping them on me, which would have been pretty cold this day. The shirt was a reasonably attractive short sleeve tech shirt. I paid extra for a fleece-lined quarter zip pullover, which is wonderful. I'll really enjoy it if I can get it back from my wife. The medal was okay; nothing enormous, but not exactly cheap either. I stayed at the Hampton Inn about a 1/2 mile from the start, so I can't comment on bag drop or the facilities, although I seem to remember a good number of port-o-lets both at the start and along the course. There was minimal crowd support, but it was frigid out, so I don't think that I would have been out either. I frankly don't pay attention to the crowds or lack thereof, so I'm not one to ask. There were abundant volunteers at every water stop, so there was no risk of blowing a water stop and ending up thirsty. The course was well marked, and I never worried about getting lost, although I was out there with my 5,000 closest friends for the day, so little chance of that. Merging with the half-marathoners for the last mile or two was a bummer, but most were considerate. I only had to yell at one or two. I didn't hang around at the finish, leaving through the first exit I could find due to the cold, so I can't speak to post-race food or anything besides water and Gatorade. Overall, this was an above average big-city marathon that was certainly smaller and more convenient than Boston, New York, or LA, even if it lacked the cache of those races, but it wasn't Twin Cities or Marine Corps either.

Top 20 in size for US

One of top 20 largest marathons in the US. Expect good organization and it was delivered. Additionally the course was flat there were other PR seekers to run with. Spectators only get 3 stars for not being out in upper 20s to lower 30s temperatures. Don't blame em.

Flawless race!

It was freezing and the wind made it too cold for me. Besides that a very fine race. There was some crowd support but not overwhelming like Chicago, London, Pittsburgh or Tokyo. But good enough for me. The course seemed fast to me, clearly marked & great drink stations with great volunteers. Only the last miles together with the half marathoners was a bit difficult. Small part for the marathon runners on the bad side of the road. The start, finish and expo is within 500 meters downtown and there a plenty of hotels around. Besides that enough restaurants, museums, sights (capitol, memorials) & shops. I did receive 2 running shirts, long sleeve by mail and short sleeve at the expo.

good course, no crowd support and poor planning

This is a good course very flat and pretty. However, there is no crowd support what so ever. Plus they way they handle the corals is very poorly done. The medal is cheap for a race of its size and popularity. So if your looking for a bare bones race with the basics and little crowd support this is the race for you. If your looking for a PR or a boston qualifier this is the one for you. If your looking for both scenery...crowd support and lots of excitement in the race expierence then this race falls short.

Fantastic Race!

PR course

Very well organized race, with a fairly flat, fast course. Lots of well stocked aid stations, I missed the first one due to the early congestion. Wave starts were a nice plan, but I didn't see anyone checking bibs or enforcing it. Luckily it seemed fairly well self policed, I only noticed two or three people that probably started farther forward than they really should have. Some stretches of the course shared the road with vehicles, they seemed more aware/courteous than most Saturday morning long run traffic. I agree with some of the previous year's reviews of some rough spots in the road, but since we usually had at least a full lane to run in, they were avoidable. Perfect weather this year, minus the mostly headwind for the majority of the 2nd half. Very well organized finish area with good post race food (pizza, chocolate milk and cookies - check, check and check, and bananas naturally). Expo was about what you would expect for this size race, crowd/community support was pretty good, but not present for all 26.2 if that's something you need.

great race. no crowd support at all

Ok so this race the course is awesome. scenic and flat. However the thing that would take this to another level would to be to have much better crowd support for this race. There was nobody out supporting their towns marathon. So if you rely on crowd support you wont get it in indy. The food was decent but modest. The gatorade looked brown might want to fix that...They ran out of bananas and oranges during the race so those that were in the later hours of th race 5+hour marathoners didnt have that option. The medal was pretty cheesy and cheap for a race of this size. Put some weight to that medal we definitely earned it. So the question is would I run this race again...I would say maybe if other big races were all ready sold out...its late in the fall racing season and has to compete in November with Philly and New York...not to mention most people look at October as prime month for fall marathons. I would say it isnt a destination marathon but it could be. Granted it did sell out but I would look at races like Chicago, Twin Cities, Detroit and Columbus in the midwest before I signed up for indy for a second time. By far the worst crowd support I have have had during a race. Those that were out there were pretty quiet...as it was...

I've done 25+ marathons and have to say this was the best one yet. Indy does a great job hosting. President Trump was in town so I was expecting some race day inconveniences- the race went off without a hitch.

Potentially a fast run w/ nice amenities

The expo was decent size with some good deals and a variety of vendors. Packet pickup a breeze. My only issue and this applies in general to downtown Indy, the parking! Limited and pricey. If you are coming from out of town, save yourself the headache and just uber from the airport and stay near the start/finish. I drove in from the burbs and pre-booked a spot on spothero. Easily pulled in and parked at 7 am and then walked about 10 mins to the start area. The starting corrals were a bit of a mess and I don't think anyone was enforcing (checking bibs). I was in wave 5 and put myself at the start of that wave....not sure why I was there because my estimated finish when I registered was 5:15 and the 5:30 pacer was in wave 4! So, for the first 3 miles I was dodging people walking 3 across, and the crowding didn't really let up until after the half marathoners split off. Oh and BTW, what the heck with the conditions of the roads? I thought DC had horrible pot holes! Really had to watch it in some spots. I saw one person go down face first and get a bloody nose. The water stops were well organized and stocked and it was easy to see where it was water vs. gatorade. They should have had more porta pottys along the course, especially the first half. It was great that they were at each aid station, but how about 3 or 4 instead of 2? Each one had a line about 10 people deep until finially at the half way point I had to just suck it up and wait in line....lost about 5 mins there. Later ones didn't have a line or if they did it was much shorter..... Finish area was well organized and I loved that the free pizza was inside the tent in case of bad weather. Medal is gorgeous! Also appreciated that the local Y let runners shower for free. A big help and I am sure the people on my evening flight home appreciated it too! I would go back and run again, but since I am doing the states, I will do the half next time.

5 Star Race All Around!

I had a great experience at the 2018 Monumental Marathon. The best part for me was the course. I wanted a course with enough turns to add variety and a flat fast course but not so pancake flat that the grade never changes. In that respect, the Indy course is awesome - a couple of long gradual grades but the reality is this is a PR course. My only complaint is beyond the control of the race organizers is the inevitable potholes and jacked up roads you would find anywhere in the midwest. Much of the course had fresh asphalt but for quite a few miles the roads were pretty rough. I'm not one to do a race for the expo or post race festivities but both were decent. Given the tri-state choices of Grand Rapids, Detroit or Columbus for a late October/early November marathon I wouldn't hesitate to sign up for Indy again.

To date: My Favorite Marathon

So far, this is my favorite marathon - loved Indianapolis! Pros: Great course for a PR! The course is fairly flat, and you do pass some great sites. Packet pick-up was well organized (for the size of the race, there could have been more expo vendors). Each mile is clearly marked. Good amount of spectators cheering you on and great volunteer support. Cons: There are some very uneven road surfaces on the course. Even with a wave start, the first miles are very congested (added an extra .22 miles to my Garmin having to dodge around so many people). There were several cross roads where cars pulled out in front of the runners. *NEED MORE PORTA-POTTIES ALONG THE COURSE - There was always a line of people waiting to use them along the course :(

Fast course, good time of year to race

My fastest marathon to date. You get a great tour of the city with the course, which is almost entirely flat. Plus the time of year is pretty much perfect for fast racing, 40s-50s most years.

Solid race in a very nice city

Generally a very good race with good organization. My only major complaint was an extremely congested starting area. Fortunately, I was still able to get into a decent pace quickly. A scenic course, particularly through the downtown sections. Very nice finish area near the capitol. Mostly flat course with a few not very steep hills. Great swag with a nice t-shirt, medal, and beanie and plenty of food, including chocolate milk. Very good race. After the race enjoy a cold one at either Bier Brewing or Metazoa Brewing Co.

Flat course and well organized.

This race was 99% good. The best things were: the really flat course, the good separation of marathon & half (the halfers didn't get in my way), starting & finishing so close to hotels, the pasta dinner and the overall organization. The things that were just 'okay' were the crowd support, the number/distribution of porta-potties along the course and the look of the medal. The only real negatives were a lot of potholes on the course, running on a very slanted road most of the course and not very good traffic control (3 times I saw cars drive across the course with no traffic control - nearly hitting runners).

Big city appeal with ease

Great race, probably the best of my five. Attractive course pairing downtown Indianapolis's monuments with pleasant runs through old-money neighborhoods and parkland. Very flat with only a couple minor hills. PROS: Well-integrated logistics on booking hotel and parking. Easy to get in and out of downtown and race day and easy for family spectators to get to multiple points on course. Nice to have the convention center open before the race to stay warm before heading to the start line. Attractive, well-staffed course that one could set a PR or BQ on. Good spectator support downtown and in the neighborhoods. CON: Only complaint was the convention center could've easily opened more restrooms beforehand. Lines inside got very long in the hour before the start, though port-a-lets were available closer to the start line.

Well organized & Easy logistics

Overall very well organized - didnt find a hiccup with anything related to the race. They started right on time, well marked course with enthusiastic volunteers and folks along the way making sure you didn't miss a turn or even have to think about which way to go. More than ample aid stations that were well staffed and well stocked. Great job by the volunteers!! Great crowd support, bands, cheering sections etc. to help get you through the tough miles late in the race. Super well organized finish area with plenty of snacks, cookies, water, chocolate milk. Plenty of post race pizza and a nice tent to sit. Super easy getting around with everything right downtown I literally walked out of the Embassy Suites hotel and around the corner to the start, the finish was a block away and the expo just down the street. The hotel was super convenient and they were kind enough to let me back in my room to shower and change after. As you would expect with any large race there is a little congestion at the start. The only crazy part was where the marathon & 1/2 marathoners came together the last few miles. It definitely kept you on your toes as there was the need to dodge in and out in a few places. Traffic wasn't an issue and public safety officials had given thought to several key areas, blocking access with city busses, etc. Overall a great experience. Thanks to the race team for getting me off the waiting list and in to the race and thanks for doing it so quickly.

flat, fast and very, very well organized

This race has grown quickly from positive word-of-mouth and the organizers deserve the credit for that. Packet pick-up is a breeze at the massive exhibition center, which also then is open before the race as a warm place to use restrooms and stretch out before walking a block to the starting point. The post-race food is the best I've ever experienced - chips, chocolate milk, fruit, pizza (Between this and the on-course food, a person could possibly run this race and gain weight). Parking is advertised on the race website from a parking garage sponsor at high prices, but ample and cheaper parking garages are available on race day just a couple blocks east of the finish line. They advertise the course as flat and the one minor hill that hits around mile 16 is more of an annoying bump than a hill. The on-course hydration stations are seemingly everywhere, most stocked with excellent Gatorade (not the watered-down stuff seen on many marathons). You also pass three candy stations, three gu stations, and several private groups (churches, neighborhood associations, etc) also handing out water or candy on their own. The event volunteers and traffic control were tremendous and very supportive. Although this is a big race, the new wave start kept things from being overly congested. My one big complaint is the lack of crowd support. Crowds are big at the start and finish, but mid-speed runners saw surprisingly few spectators on the last half of the race (50 degrees and off-and-on mist wasn't crowd friendly, but some of the neighborhoods were downright empty). Overall, Indy is a fast course and the race allows you to truly see and experience the city of Indianapolis.

Not a Hill to Be Found, Good Experience!

Out of towner, who came in to run this as my fall marathon with another runner. Pros: Not a hill to be found, hardly a bump! Expo was very easy to get in and get out with what you need. Everything is located downtown (start, finish, expo, hotels, etc) so that makes the logistics of race morning a breeze. Mile markers very clearly marked, aid stations stocked, well defined course route. Weather couldn't have been better this year. About 45 to start, 55 to finish. Finish chute was easy to navigate after. Medal and t-shirt were okay for those that are big into these things. The mobile app was pretty cool and accurate. A true not for profit race, good job by the organizers! Cons: There was a ton of congestion in the first mile or two (Half Marathon goes with full until mile 7). I was in the 3:10 pace area and had to deal with a fair amount of congestion (there are a lot of turns in the beginning, which does not help with the crowds), however everyone that started a little bit farther back had to deal with the congestion a lot more than I. I get how this can be frustrating, I think a corral starting system would work wonders. Some of the roads are not closed to traffic. For example a four lane road has one lane specifically for runners with the other three open to traffic. Couple this with the size of this race, it's tough to squeeze so many runners into one single lane. Not so much an issue for the front of the pack, but once you get back into the 3:30+ finishes, this could be an issue. I've noticed a lot of the roads were pretty bumpy, maybe they were normal 'bumpiness' but this is the first time it has stood out to me in a race. Nothing the RD can do, but something I noticed nonetheless. Overall, great experience. If you're looking for a later fall marathon on a flat and fast course, here ya' go.

One of the best1

I ran this race for the first time in 2015 and again this year. Excellent weather conditions both times which obviously helps! Route is very scenic with all the monuments and just slightly rolling...a good course to PR on which I did both years. As others have stated, the biggest downfall is the start and the first few miles which are very congested. I believe implementing a wave start would help this tremendously. Otherwise it's a great experience.

Don't believe the hype...

Pros: good course/time of year for a PR. Can be choppy roads at places. The shirt was nice. Cons: Crowds are okay, but they are all silent. Literally no cheering most of the course, no high fives, was just lame all around. The organization of the start is abysmal. To have a corral system but no accountability, along with letting everyone go at once with no gap, made sure that slower people were ahead of faster people and it was very crowded for three miles. Medal was unimpressive. Overall it was fine, a fast course, but disappointing crowds, and a terrible start/corral system. I might run it again for convenience/weather, but not sure what all the hype is about.

Growing Marathon; will it find full potential?

This is a terrific race which can become a very significant annual event. Pros: The course is terrific. Very flat, pleasant visually. Spectators are very upbeat, support is very good. Amenities at the finish line are terrific. The 2016 T shirt is one of the best I've ever received. Cons: One and only one thing to work on ; start grid organization. I posted on this page about the 2015 race with similar concerns. Capitol Avenue is not wide enough to accommodate the surge of runners all crossing the start line. It was well into mile 5 before I was even close to finding enough space to get my pace. On this course, the organizers need to institute a wave start. Otherwise, a very good experience. Thanks to the organizers for listening.

Well organized, pretty course

Nice race, with a lot of water/Gatorade stops and THREE gel stops. The course has more small rolling hills than I expected, but nothing too big or too long so it was not bad. You also get to go to a beautiful YMCA to take a shower right away by showing your bib if you don't want to stay another night in a hotel. It's a little bit of a walk after running a marathon but glad to have it. Some of the pacers bonked, but that could happen anywhere. Very responsive to questions via email before race day, too. Spectators can be sparse in places, but that did not bother me. Runners were nice and talked to each other. Lots of BQ hopefuls in this race, it felt like. AND a bonus - this is a charity race so by running it, you are also giving back. That's AWESOME!

Gets Better Every Year

This was my second time running this race. The issues that I had last year (a few intersections that weren't patrolled and running out of gels) were corrected this year, but that could also be because I ran a much faster time as well. The new start route to the race did alleviate some of the congestion, but there is still a good bit of bottleneck at the beginning, but for such a large race, you have to expect it. The crowds were once again enthusiastic and made the race enjoyable. I moved to Indiana between the 2014 edition and this years race, so it was extra special to run my first marathon as an official Hoosier. Already training for 2016!

Great Race to PR

A well organized race with plenty of course support - water, aid, gel, kleenix. The course is flat and runs through the streets of Indy including Monument Circle, passing by Lucas Oil Stadium, lovely neighborhoods, and Butler University. I really enjoyed the race and was happy to receive a PR. AM Low - 30s PM High - 55. Great time!

Nice, flat, crowded course

The course was flat and fast, weather was perfect and the spectators were great. The course, as others have mentioned, was definitely crowded, especially before the half marathoners split off from the full marathon course. Expo was sparse compared to some of the other comparably sized marathons in the midwest (especially Akron), but it hit all the essentials. The only significant gripe I have is that the results were only reported as gun time results and never adjusted for actual time. I was not in a seeded corral and had to start 5+ minutes after gun time, but my results were never adjusted. For a marathon this size, this is not excusable in my book.

Great course, nice city!

I was really impressed with the entire weekend experience. We stayed downtown at the JW Marriott and walked a block to/from the race. Downtown Indy is really nice between the cool old buildings and monuments, the river, the canal, museums, state park, etc. We biked all over the day after the race. The course itself was very scenic. My only complaint is that the race was rather tight and pretty crowded. Perhaps they should consider widening the course or staggered starting waves. Especially the first 7 miles, until the halfies turned off, it was quite tight and a little challenging to maintain your desired pace. Perfect weather starting in the mid 40's and getting into the low 50's and sunny. I set a 16 min PR but didn't quite get my BQ. I highly recommend Indy to anyone. Treat yourself to a downtown hotel if you can swing it and bring your bike for a recovery ride the next day. Take in a nice restaurant. Nice people too!

Nice flat + fast course in the heart of Indy

Great course - mostly flat with some very minor hills. Held in early Nov so the weather can be unpredictable. 2015 race was run on a perfect running day (mid 40s at the start, low 50s at the finish, very little wind). Loop course with half-marathoners splitting off at mile 7 and rejoining between miles 23-24. Great job of segregating slower half-marathon runners from marathon runners so this was not an issue (unlike other courses..ahem, Dayton). Small/minor issues - only half the road is closed for portions of the course so it can get tight if you're running in a group. Police did a good job ensuring no vehicular traffic interrupted runners on the course. Also, some of the water stations were inconsistent - water + Gatorade at some, just water at others. Some aid stations had fewer volunteers meaning it was easy to miss the water/Gatorade cup if you weren't thinking ahead. The city of Indianapolis has a great infrastructure - very well planned out with hotels, convention center, parking and restaurants. Easily walked everywhere during race weekend. Overall a great race that I will continue to run for many years to come.

A Growing Marathon & Event

This race is growing and for a good reason...flat course and usually good weather (perfect day in 2015). Well organized. I PRed and had a good time. My only concern was the crowd. With 11,000 marathoners and half marathoners through mile 7, it was just plain too tight in many places...curb to curb and it was work to keep from clipping someone else's heels. I finished just under 4 hours and ran in a crowd the whole way. Nice event, though, nice alternative to other big city races.

Great race!

Fast flat well organized marathon. Big enough yet still has a small race feel. Great place to get a BQ. Course is great but some of the roads need to be paved & fixed in spots. Good crowd support. Gear check, start corrals, expo, parking, pre and post race activities were all extremely fluid and easy. Nice t-shirt, hat, and medal as well.

Small enough yet big enough to be done well.

I've run this 3 times, hit a BQ on the 3rd! I like that it's a hometown race (although I'm travelling from another state) and not a 'major marathon'. They have done a good job thinking of lots of details which translates into good experience. Mostly flat course, with a few slopes to help change up gait. Only complaints are a few roads are older/torn up at different parts of the city so you have to watch footing, and the last .2miles is narrow and I literally ran into walkers from the half-marathon while trying to hold on for the finish. My friend road a bike around and supported me at multiple points on course and she had no problems navigating.

Please, Hold Your Applause Until the End

Between miles 6 and 10 we ran through a leafy residential neighborhood where the families were out on the curbs, cheering with such enthusiasm that I wanted to tell them, I dont think we are who you think we are, because my plodding past your house too early on a cold, windy morning doesnt warrant that kind of cheering. But, thanks anyway. The course is fast. Its not quite Chicago flat, but close enough to round up. The first few miles weave and dodge through downtown - they seem to want to check off all of Indianapoliss points of interest. After that, there are not a lot of turns to slow you down. The practicalities of the event were handled well enough that I didnt even think about them during the race: well-marked and marshalled course, ample water stations, accurate and easy-to-see mile markers. As many others have mentioned, the minor intersections did not have police crossing guards. As I ran by, the cars trying to cross the course were patient and considerate. A Chicago race without police at every intersection would be well-marked by the trail of runners corpses. The last three miles we shared the road with the half-marathoners, but they kept us segregated, so no problems. The finish line in front of the state capitol was a nice touch. The only negative aspect to the race - which I figured out later and, unfortunately, draws attention to my vanity - is that the runner is responsible for knowing after the race whether or not he won an age-group award, and must go pick it up then and there. And since the award was a beer glass, I am extra-irritated that I missed out. For a more meandering version of the above, see: http://traveldiaryofamadman.com/indianapolis-monumental/

Great, well organized race

The race and expo are run by a top notch group of professionals that have clearly done this before and know what they are doing. The course was great, well marked and conducive to running a good time. The aid stations ran out of gels when the slow people (me) rumbled through there, but the organizers have acknowledged this and are working on improving that for next year. My only other complaint is that some Hoosiers that were out driving that morning were not too concerned with human livesthem getting through an intersection was much more important. I would have liked to have seen more of a police presence (okay, much more) towards the end of the race to keep the impatient fools away. Otherwise, it was a great race, I PR'd by 6:30 and am already making my plans to return next year. In fact, I'm planning to move to Indy to make it even easier to run this race for years to come!

Great Flat Marathon Course - Great organization

This was my first full marathon and it was a great one. I live in Indy so it was a easy choice for my first 26.2. I have done 6 half marathons and a half Ironman. The race is in November so it can be chilly as it was on Nov 1, 2014 - it was about 18 degrees with wind to add to the chill factor. But once we got going the cold was not a factor. You run through most of downtown Indy and pass most all of the monuments Indy has on display. I skipped the first 2 aid stations as they seemed a little congested. After that they were easy to manage. Great volunteers at the aid stations that offered water/lime gatorade, cliff blocks at around mile 15 and oranges/pretzels/chocolate at mile 20ish. You run the first 6 miles with the half marathoners and the final 2.5 with the half marathoners if fast enough. The volunteers were great - so was the on-course entertainment. Except the guy burning wood in a portable fire place - smoke smell hurt the lungs a little. Most of the run is through nice parts of town - including downtown, broadripple, Butler Univ, some residential areas and the Art Museum. Miles 19-23 are pretty lonely. The roads are closed down to traffic and there is not much support back there. But I did not feel a hill or incline for that matter at all on the course - very flat. I loved it and can't wait to run another monumental race. Organization is very involved on social media. The race seemed well organized. Expo was good. Plenty of vendors and other race organizations present.

A very nice race in a very nice city.

I chose this race as my Indiana race based on the previous reviews. I truly only had two complaints. In some areas the streets are in bad shape so to avoid stumbling I missed a lot of the view which seemed very nice. Mainly I was frustrated with the start. I was not given a corral as I missed the cut off time by 2 minutes. Therefore I lined up directly behind the end of the last official corral. I ended up with people that were running 10 plus minute miles and breaking out of the crowd was beyond difficult for a couple of miles, a lot of weaving and pace changing was required. I missed a PR by 3 minutes. Everything else was absolutely fabulous! The Westin was great, the expo was the perfect size and easy to get to, the volunteers were helpful and enthusiastic (and it was cold out there), the finish line was fine, the medal is nice, finish line food as expected, water stops as expected, the shirt was nice. For a TRUE flatlander like myself it was a little hilly but when you are from Delaware a driveway is a hill. (run Rehoboth Beach DE if you want truly flat and fast) Out of 28 marathons in 24 states, I would say this was one of the nicer races.

Pretty Course, Good Organization

A very nice race! Pros: Pretty course through a lot of nice neighborhoods and areas Well organized Nice expo Good crowd support Downtown start and finish very convenient to hotels and restaurants (and allowed us to stay inside on a cold, windy day until the last minute!0 Minor Cons: Long stretches of cambered streets tough on the IT bands Not my favorite race shirt I enjoyed the race and the people I ran with on the course. Great job to the race organizers and volunteers!

flat course in a great city

Cold & windy on a flat course. More than a few greater than 90 deg turns made for a few traffic jams. Despite the cold weather, the aid stations were well stocked and plenty of volunteers. Crowd support was good even with the cold wind. Great expo and post-race food , especially the hot chili, made for a great marathon!

Fantastic Marathon!

I have run this marathon twice now and it is turning into a favorite. Drove up from Cincy Saturday morning. A friend picked up my race packet the day before. Parked close to start. Hung out in the Convention Center until about 15 minutes to start, so was able to keep warm and use restrooms without too much wait. Pros -Weather (not going to be hot in Nov) -Course is flat -Easy logistics -Convention Center open race morning -Ample hydration stations, several with GU -Gear check with fast and efficient Cons -Don't really have any Kudos to the race staff and volunteers for making this a great experience.

One of my faves so far

I chose this marathon based on the comments I read on this site from previous marathons and I wasn't disappointed. Downtown hotels are numerous and close to the start line and they didn't seem to raise the prices just because a marathon was in town. Other than the cold and the wind, the marathon went off without a hitch. I even saw vendors stocking gloves during the Expo and they were cheap! Although spectators were few, the ones that were out were enthusiastic and the volunteers were great. The social media was informative and the race seems to really care about the runners. The course was interesting, and I can't tell you what a thrill it was to make one of the final turns and see the downtown skyline before me. The approach to the monument was especially cool. There was a 'big-hair' band around mile 23(?) where one of the band members had a 'running sucks' shirt on. It cracked me up. Then the lead guitarist would run alongside the runners with his guitar. The only complaint I have is I think they may have run out of much of the food by the time I got through (and I still had 500+ runners behind me). All I saw was chocolate milk, a cookie, bananas and some rolls. I enjoyed this race immensely and am thrilled that I chose this race to run for a fall marathon. (Plus I got to lay in bed the next morning and watch the NYC Marathon knowing that my 26.2 was behind me!)

A Great Experience

This race was first class all the way. Everything about this race flowed smoothly from start to finish. The expo was very easy to navigate. Paid $5 for parking in a garage that was connected to the convention center in which the expo was held. I thought the expo was a perfect size. Plenty of vendors, lots of space to navigate, yet not so large so you could get through quickly. Race morning, we parked in the same garage that we did for the expo and it was again only $5. The convention center was open and had plenty of room as well as indoor restrooms. This was particularly nice on race morning due to the unseasonably cold weather. Walked out of the convention center and was only one small block from the starting corrals. The course was flat and fast as advertised. Crowds were out even with the cold temperatures. 27 degrees at the start and I think the temp only got up to about 35 during the race. With the sunshine, I thought it made for nice running weather. The winds were strong at times, but overall not too bad. Half course stayed with the full for the first 7 miles and then joined back up at mile 22 or 23. One thing I noticed was the amount of crowd support during miles 7 through 22. Ive noticed crowds usually are abundant during the half course, but not the full. This was not the case at the monumental. The crowds were a nice size during the last mile as we entered back into downtown. Ending was right at the capitol building which was scenic. Medal and race shirt were top notch. Finishers received both a finishers hat and type of light jacket instead of the blanket. Standing in the finishers area shaking hands was the founder of the race. He was there for a quick handshake and some encouraging words. This race is fantastic. I would HIGHLY recommend running the IMM.

Ok but expected more from Indy

This race lacked the urban feel that I was expecting. You run the first three miles through downtown Indy, but don't see the city again until the finish. Some runners can appreciate the more laid back route of running past homes and trees, but I prefer experiencing the city more. Overall, Indy is relatively flat with few turns. The course is only partially closed in some areas so traffic was backed up and moving along side runners. Fluid stations were small and lacked proper staffing causing runners to slow down at each stop. I also didn't see many toilets throughout the course which could be problematic for some. There weren't many spectators throughout the course, but it was VERY cold so it was forgivable. With that being said, miles 18-24 were even more of a mental challenge being as quiet as it was. The expo was ok. It had enough to make it worthwhile, but was very small compared to other races similar in size (Pittsburgh, Detroit). I've experienced smaller races that offered more (Akron). If you can register early enough in the year then this race is a very good value. However, I would avoid paying some of the higher fees that appear closer to the race date. I would do this race again, but only the half. The full left a lot to be desired.

Awesome race

I've run this race every year it has been hosted; half in 2008 and the full every year since. The course is extremely flat (to the point that small rises seem 'big'). I've BQ'd every time I've run the full and ran to a new PR on the course yesterday (2:42:30). The organization of the start is excellent and the volunteers at the water stops are great. There can be some broken pavement on course but runners are usually a helpful bunch and are quick to point trouble spots out to other runners. The course winds through some great parts of Indy; spectators can be sparse at times. I plan to run this race every year that I'm able.

Fast, flat and cool. Great marathon.

This is a great marathon to run a fast time. Downtown Indianapolis is a great location, very easy to get to, plenty of hotels and parking, everything is within a short walk. Plenty of places for a post race beer, or sample some wine. There were a few streets that were a little rough and you had to watch your footing, but all in all a very nice course. A little congested for the first few miles, to be expected. Thinned out enough by mile 3 to easily maintain pace. The only real negative was the pasta dinner could have been better, they ran out of food and people had to wait. The dinner in 2012 was phenomenal, hopefully they bring this back.

Flat and Fast! I BQed! Loved this race!

Loved everything about this marathon. It was my 5th marathon and I PRed/BQed. Comments talking about hills baffle me as I don't remember a single hill up or down. It was amazingly flat! I am from Tennessee and I guess I am just used to hills. Good organization with very frequent water stops (seemed like they came every mile). I stayed at Embassy Suites right at Start/Finish and it was super convenient. They have a daily free happy hour which turned into a runner Meet and Greet both Friday and Saturday nights. Really fun to talk to other runners and share stories! My only complaints (and they are few): course was congested until about mile or 10 (this turned in to a good thing for me, because it kept me from coming out to fast); road surfaces were poor (I was told that it is due to cold climate in Indy); and head wind coming to finish line was brutal (only God can change that, I guess). If you want to run a well organized race that is fast - choose IMM!

Monumental is memorable!

I won't repeat the positives that other runners have already mentioned: the flatness of the course, the perfect temps (40 at the start, 50 at the finish), good organization, and cheerful volunteers. What surprised me was that the city area, at least around the downtown hotels and race start and finish, was not only exceptionally clean but very safe. We never saw any suspicious people (like you often see in big cities) while walking at night and we didn't see the litter that seems to inevitably accumulate on big city streets. Refreshing. We stayed at the Westin, which was close to the start and finish and very accommodating to a late checkout. The course was more scenic than I thought it would be. Pleasant neighborhoods and lots of trees, which always break up the monotony. Another surprise: no dilapidated sections of town to run through that again are common in city marathons. Nice job with the route, guys! All in all, this marathon is worth repeating! Congrats to the marathon organizers! It will grow.

Solid Fall Marathon

I enjoyed this race...it's a very runnable course (with one exception, see below). Water stops are well positioned, the hills are really minimal. My only concern was how crowded the course became, particularly on the north portion of Meridian Street. Wedged into a single lane of a busy city street, I had no room to really run my pace without worrying about tripping someone or tripping myself. I'm sure they will work this out. It's a nice race...I really liked the post race arrangements and food.

Small town feel in a big time marathon

115 runners under 3 hours out of 3500. That will tell you the course is fast. Hotels located at the start. Flat course, except some downhill towards the end, which my hammy was not used to. Great crowd. Well run event. I would do it again. Yes, I Pr'ed as well, even after a fade.

Nice course, cool city, good race.

This is a well run race, and I thoroughly enjoyed my tour of Indianapolis. Weather was good except for the wind, but you can't control that. My only complaint was that they ran out of food very early on at the pasta party and it took a good 20-30 min to bring more. Many people were left standing around waiting and that is not good; however, it can be fixed. Downtown hotel access and restaurants was good and you wouldn't need a car if you flew in. We waited in our hotel until 7:35 and had gear checked and in the corral with a good 15 min to spare.

Make This Your Fall Race!

The Monumental Marathon continues to improve and grow, based in large part on runner feedback from previous years and that race organizers have worked tirelessly to increase community support and awareness. Monumental was as well organized and supported race as I've run, and is become a serious contender in the line-up of fall races! The Pros: Great communication pre and post race. Very convenient in so many aspects - plenty of parking, accessibility to expo, easy to stay warm in a hotel w/ plenty of bathrooms before the race, etc. Plenty of aid stations, excellent selection of post-race food (chocolate milk, chili, etc.), beautiful spinner medal, top-end tech shirt and added bonus finisher beanie make this race an excellent value. Extremely flat and fast course, with the only minor uphills coming around mile 16-17 at Butler and a great downhill at 19. Traditionally the weather has been very cooperative, and this year was no different. You won't find a more PR or BQ friendly course! Previous comments about spectator support and course security have been improved - the course was more secure and there were significantly more, enthusiastic spectators this year. Could Be Better: Course congestion continues to be a problem and I actually found it worse this year than years past. I started with the 3:30 group in the 4th seeded corral, and the course congestion continued even after the half marathoners split on Fall Creek. It's frustrating to pass walkers the first mile or two, but since it is an honor system there's really no control over it. PLEASE consider a monitored corral system and / or a separate start for the half and full marathons next year. Overall, IMM is highly recommended - you won't regret making this your fall marathon!

Make Monumental Your Indiana Marathon!

FANTASTIC Marathon - The expo was conveniently located downtown a block away from the start line and stayed open until 9:00pm the night before. The course was extremely flat and very scenic with a lot of great variety. The organization was terrific and the SWAG was unbeatable, particularly the shirt, medal and the hat when I crossed the finish line. I ran Chicago 3 weeks prior and I prefer Monumental to Chicago for organization, SWAG and overall experience. I HIGHLY recommend this marathon, especially to somebody needing to 'check off' Indiana as a state.

Flat, fast, and well-organized

Pretty good race, overall. The starting corral set-up needs work (it was pretty much a mass gaggle). The course was flat and well-marked. What they lacked in spectator quantity, they made up for with enthusiasm. Most water/Gatorade stops of any of my marathons, thus far.

Good marathon - some tweeks warranted

I ran this race with a friend of mine. The weather was perfect and the course was pretty good. There were some small, short sections of the road that had some major pot holes in it. The water stops were a little too small and should be made longer in my view for a race of this size. The pasta dinner was well set up, except they ran out of food for a period of time. More food came in a period of time however. The shirt is great and the medal is nice. I would recommend this race and I hope a few tweeks are made to improve it, then I would give it all 5 stars.

A perfect autumn marathon

I highly recommend this race for everyone. Experienced runners looking to qualify for Boston, first-timers just hoping to finish, and everyone in between will enjoy this race. The course is flat and pleasant, the volunteers and spectators very friendly, the city great and easy to navigate, and the start and finish readily accessible and stress free. The race started at 8- I left my hotel at 7:35 and was standing in my corral at the starting line by 7:45. There are some spots on the course that are less-than-scenic or sparsely populated with spectators, but that is to be expected in a smaller marathon.

A marathon on the rise. Great alternative to NYC

This year was my first with the IMM and first time visiting Indy. I enjoyed every minute from the time I got into town until I departed. The weather was perfect and the course highlights many of the major parts of the city. Downtown is clean and has many good restaurants. The course is pretty flat and fast. Ideal race to hit your PR. Many folks PR'd and BQ'd. Not all streets are completely closed for the race, but I never had an issue with cars. The police did a commendable job directing traffic and keeping the runners safe. The expo was a little cramped for space, but I did get there on Friday evening so that's my fault. Hydration stations were plentiful. 4 stations had blocks & gels. In the latter stages of the marathon I noticed a lot more volunteers on bikes ready to assist runners with cramps/dehydration/etc. The crowds were great although sparse in some areas. All the fall foliage around town was beautiful. The medals were way cool and you get a finishers beanie at the finish line. This may be IMM's 6th year, but they run it like they've been doing it for 20. Highly recommend.

Great flat, nice course!

This was an excellent marathon! Well-organized, great volunteers, flat, scenic course, good spectator support. Start and finish were easy to get to, and parking was not a problem. Big enough to be interesting and fun, but not so big that you get lost in the crowd. The only complaint I have is that some of the roads we ran on were somewhat torn up, making rolling an ankle a tiny worry. Other than that, absolutely no complaints.

Great Race!

Great race, very well organized with good swag (awesome shirt plus hat for finishers and nice medal). Great volunteers and lots of spectators. Gatorade and water, lots of stations and gel was available. Course is super flat and a good one to get a PR. Race had tents for runners to stay warm in (thx Steak n Shake for being major sponsor with free chili).

getting better, with some minor issues

As mentioned in other reviews the course is flat and fast and does go through some of the nicer parts of town. The food and water during the race were ample, as were on course bathrooms. There were a few areas where we were running in thick traffic, but generally for shorter stretches. Overall, well done and the fan support was better than in the past. A few areas for improvement- -water stops sneak up on you, which would lead to chaos as runners would quickly dart to the side. This could be rectified by moving water stops out of blind corners or by placing flags 100 yards before them. Chicago does this effectively, if you're looking for an example. - having port o potties on opposite sides of the street at the start led to a tangle of lines. Easy fix-spread them out - road surface was really bad in a few spots, not just the construction zone at mile 20. I imagine you don't have much sway over Indot, but there were a few really dangerous sections.

Fun, low-key race

Weather is usually favorable and the course is flat and runs fast. Two aid stations that offer Cliff shots and blocks. (Word of advice on the blocks- if it's cold, the blocks will be ice blocks). Steak N Shake chili at the finish was interesting. Overall, good race, with a small field that allows you to get to your target pace quicker. Great race for a first timer.

Will do again

Great fast course. Nice cold weather. My only complaint is that the pace groups leave the expo too early. Spectators are good, however I am not really concerned about that. Great starting point near many hotels! I was able to walk out of the hotel and be at the start in two minutes, which means I used my own bathroom for the race! Love that factor! This is one of the reasons I will continue to run this race.

Great experience overall

I am pursuing the 50 states and chose this for my Indiana marathon and I was not disappointed. The course is flat with just a few minor hills near Butler University. The organization is excellent overall and the logistics are easy. There are plenty of hotels within walking distance of the start and expo. I actually booked the Spring Hill Suites through AAA before the marathon web site released hotel information and got an even better rate. I found it a little strange that the aid stations were not at mile markers so that threw me off a little bit since I'm used to taking GU and/or salt pills at specific miles. Overall the spectators on the course were really awesome despite the poor weather. I enjoyed all of the turns on the course and especially enjoyed the trivia questions on the course later in the race. My biggest disappointment in the race was the lack of food and drinks at the finish line. The race proudly advertises all of the great food and chocolate milk that will be at the finish line and even marks the finish area map with the places where milk will be. Unfortunately I think the only food that was left when I finished was a banana, and there was no chocolate milk. After running 26.2 miles in the hail, rain, and cold I was really disappointed with the lack of food. I heard that spectators took food and that runners took more than their fair share. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. I was impressed with the traffic control on the course and also with the friendliness of the police officers. Apparently past traffic issues have been addressed. Overall the event was well-organized and I really enjoyed the course. I ran 2 other marathons in the fall and this was the flattest and I appreciated that. It was a fun way to see Indianapolis. I was also excited to meet Boston Marathon winner Wesley Korir and was happy that they had a celebrity runner at the Expo. If the food situation gets fixed then I'd give the whole event 5 stars all-around.

superb course, extraordinary volunteers !

This was my 46th marathon, and I was completely stunned by the organization quality and the Volunteers ! The course was beautiful as well, despite the sleet :( the volunteers were so helpful. Aid stations every mile were incredibly organized. Flat, fast race, excellent if you are a beginner. Results and pictures posted extremely FAST ! I will definitely come back next year !

Fantastic Marathon Course!

This is my 4th monumental and it keeps getting better every year! Best parts of this marathon is its flat, plenty of space to stay warm before the start, typically perfect running weather (this year was first not so good weather, stayed at 34 and rained a bit with some sleet but not a big deal), nice size expo, plenty of hotels right at the start, volunteers a plenty, and the finish shoot food is top notch matching NY and Chicago type options! Keep up the great work and thank you to all who put this race on!

Just what you want in a city race

If you are looking for a city race with a flat course then the Monumental Marathon is for you. The organization was very well done, from the expo, to the starting area and the finish line. The expo is not large, but for the size of the race it was fine. The start had signs being held to show pace minutes per mile. While no one checked, most people seemed to line up correctly. The course is FLAT and fast. I had a BQ day, yes it was cold (34) at the start. Yes it rained and sleeted, we can't control the weather. The volunteers on the course and at the finish were tremendous. If you have been thinking about this one, put it on you list. It's a good one to do.

Excellent, flat, fall, cool, urban marathon

This was my 2nd Indy Monumental and marathon #11 overall. I would classify this race as low stress. The course is flat. The expo is relatively small. The hotels are plentiful and most are only a block or 2 from the start/finish and expo. Plenty of water/aid stations. Not too big and not too small. Highly reco this marathon - I expect it will grow in size or sell out quicker (if they cap it) in future years.

Flat, well organized race

I liked this race alot. The expo is held at the downtown convention center which is blocks away from the start and finish areas. There are numerous hotels right there for out of town runners. It's a typical mid-size expo and I got out quickly. I saw a shirt exchange table which is always a nice touch. Usually if you want to exchange your shirt to another size it can get ugly. I always get to the start line early so I had no trouble getting to the parking garage which charged only $5. I was able to stay warm pre-race in one of the hotel's lobby and lines at the port-a-potties were short. The course is quite nice. We run a few miles through the downtown core (by the Colts Stadium and Monument circle) and then headed out to more suburban areas. There is really nice stretch through the art museum grounds around mile 18. The views changed often which I like while running a marathon. There's a fairly boring section we hit after mile 20 or so where the organizers have Hoosier trivia questions. I only got one right but I appreciate any diversion during the latter miles of a marathon. The course is very flat. The biggest hill I saw we run down (Yahoo) at mile 19 or so. There are plenty of water spots. They only have sports drink (gatorade)at every other spot but this was consistant throughout the race and the banners announcing the stops always showed if Gatorade was there or not. They did hand out gels but since I carry my own I'm not sure how many times. It looks like the race officials really tried to address the traffic problems. Almost every intersection had either police or race volunteer presence. There were a few left unmanned but I'd bet a volunteer just didn't show becuase of the cold, rainy weather. The race begins at dawn and we were treated to a nice sunrise before the weather turned bad. The fan support was minimal but I can't blame folks for not wanting to stand in the rain or sleet. I was back from the starting line and couldn't here the announcer or even the starting gun. That always makes me feel less a part of the festivities. The finishing stretch with the Capitol building in the background was excellent. It really inspired an extra push! After the race you get a very nice medal and a finisher's stocking cap. I am a sucker for an extra finishing item. The shirt is a short sleeved tech shirt. I can't eat much food right after a race so I didn't eat anything but a banana. The food area was open to spectators so the comments regarding food running out may be accurate. This is a nice mid-size race. Almost 3000 finishers and 5000 half runners. I never felt cramped in the early miles or lonely once the halfers split (around mile 7) off.

Beautifully organized

Pros: Loop course which took us through a variety of places. Food at a couple places in the last 10 miles. Port-o-potties at every aid station and a couple in between. Always a plus. Lovely finish right downtown between buildings and crowds that gave a sense of 'entering' the finish. Greeted at finish with a word of congratulation. Nice touch. Beautiful medal to commemorate one's finsih. Music along the course. Cons: Difficult to find an entrance into the starting area. Found myself farther back than I would have liked. Could hear nothing from the start line, neither announcements nor gun. Crowded start with the half marathoners. Lot of weaving and wasted energy for the first several miles to try to get around them.

Nothing but great! Except, maybe, the shirts

The best organized & planned marathon I have ever run. Having the water stops at the 1/2 mile marks made the miles somehow faster. The volunteer & spectator support was better than Disney. Course was flat & beautiful, even in the cold, sleet & rain! Only thing I would change is the shirt quality. The logo is good but the actual shirt material quality is poor, I already have snags in mine after a 1/2 day of wearing it. Its also VERY thin. I have run this race 3 times out of my 29 marathons & look forward to driving down next year to do it again. Best venue I have ever run at.

Awesome for a first timer marathon-er

This was a great experience being my first one. There are only a few things that concerned me: the starting gate was WAY over crowded, a lot of rude comments going on, which really suprised me. At times on the course I felt unsafe being so close to the angry drivers who were waiting to turn and so forth. The worst thing was at the finish, I had to go ask for my medal, the guy was so busy 'chatting' with a buddy, he wasn't passing the medals out. Sounds silly, but after running 26.2 miles, I should not have to go look for the medal. The course was pretty cool overall, really enjoyed watching the sun rise as we started off, kind of inspirational!

Good but needs finish line upgrade

The course is definitely flat and decent. Nice views of city and area. However, once again, there were some car issues. I did see a police officer screaming at a car that tried to beat people. Just something for runners to be aware of. My main complaint was the finish line and the food. It was mentioned in the previous years comments too. I finished in 4:30 which I believe to be an average time. The Jimmie John sandwiches were all gone. The Steak & Shake chile was out, though they did say more was coming. It rained the last 3 miles and I was cold, so no waiting for me. A co-worker ran the half and said her husband and brother-in-law (both just spectators) ate sandwiches etc. She saw many spectators eating the food. The finish line and food area needs to be off-limits to spectators. It was a problem last year and this year too. Get this fixed.

Flat, fast urban run

This marathon can be summed up pretty concisely: mostly flat, mostly urban/suburban, and chilly. Like many city marathons, you twist and turn quite a bit downtown before heading out on the longer, straighter paths out of town before turning around and coming back into the city center. The hills are almost imperceptible and my only complaint was some road construction and maybe a few more turns than I would have liked. The crowd support plummets after you leave the city but at no point is it nonexistent and the spectators, police, and water/gel stops are evenly spaced. The race has everything you need: lots and lots of hotel rooms within a couple blocks of the start and finish, good support at the end, and even a nice, warm hat when you finish. It is not an overcrowded race even being coupled with a half marathon (and NY marathon refugees) and I think this race was about as well organized and friendly of a location as any medium-size metropolis run is going to give you. Similar to running Baltimore and Memphis.

Truly 'a beautiful place to set your pace.'

I have no substantative complaints about this race. The expo was sufficient it terms of vendors and I got in and out quickly. The start line was literally outside my hotel's doors. The course had a lot of turns, but I don't count that as a negative; anytime the wind is in your face it won't be for long. Similarly, the views are always changing and that keeps you mentally fresh. Reviews from 2011 complained about traffic dangers. I saw none. Every intersection had police directing traffic. I was free to run my race. The water/gatorade stations were ample. They weren't as big/long as those in a major marathon, but I never had any trouble getting a drink. The finish was great and there were more food and goodies than I could handle. Volunteers kept wanting to give me more.

Sleet, cold rain, numb fingers and toesLoved It!

Hotels close to expo/start/finish! Weather great until precipitation started! Perfect size for me, not too congested (even during first 7 mi. with 13.1'ers), and never running completely alone, even at the pack's posterior. Course beautiful! Still frightening traffic problems. Finish area somewhat disorganized towards end when I arrived. Wonderful, with one mile to go, running by DJ who suddenly blasted the 'olympic theme' from the TV broadcasts! Kinda inspiring! Overall a very satisfying way to get my 25th state done. I'm halfway there!

Excellent Organization, Flat & Fast Course

Excellent fall marathon, with a very flat and fast course and typically cool weather. Great for PR and BQ attempts! I've run the half 3 times previously and this was my first year running the full. Pros: Convenient expo and race day parking (easy to stay warm in one of the hotels right by the start line). Aid station and volunteer support was top-notch. Great sized race (about 3000 finishers) so you never felt alone. Most of the course was very scenic and really well marked. Very nice medal and winter beanie hat handed out to finishers, and a good selection of post-race food including chocolate milk, sandwiches, bagels, and hot soup. Results available immediately onsite. Cons: As this race continues to grow, the course congestion and corral system needs to be addressed. The half and full start together and there is no formal corral system in place, resulting in walkers starting near the front and heavy congestion with all the turns the first few miles. I hope the organizers will consider implementing a corral system or better yet, a separate start for the half and full races. While the traffic issues from years past were minimal, there were still some dangerous spots around Meridian & Butler that could have used additional police support. Miles 21-23 are mentally pretty tough - no spectators and the least scenic part of Indy. This would be a great place for some on-course entertainment. Overall, highly recommend the Monumental Marathon - it's an excellent race that continue to get better every year!

Will do it again

I have run the half every year and this year I liked the change in the end of the course. It was nice to not have to back track once you reached monument circle. I would much rather go west to reach West street than go to monument circle and then have to go backwards. It is deflating for the end of the race. I also agree with everyone else that the traffic situation is almost unbearable. I feel bad for the people in traffic and worry that people will make an ugly choice to get out of it. Since I only ran the half the food and drink was OUTSTANDING and there was plenty. Will be back again next year - just please do something about the traffic.

Indy is a great city to visit

Pros: -Fun way to tour Indy on foot -Great food at the finish - Finishers get a stocking cap (necessary for such a cold day) - Post-race shower at the Y Cons: - Was not impressed with the course. There were several turns in the beginning of the race and the course bottle-necked. - Tech t-shirts were poor quality and were printed with a jumble of sponsors. - My pace group leader disappeared for 3 miles!

I would recommend some work with your website. I have not been able to locate the results. I know there on marathon guide but, it doesn't give splits. Awesome race!

Pros: -Course was pancake flat. Great Boston Qualifier! I also came away from this race with the impression that Indianapolis is a beautiful place to live. Great, scenic course -Streets were coned off and the police directing traffic were fantastic. Others have commented on rude drivers, but I personally did not witness any of that -Great hotel selection within walking distance of the start line -Plenty of toilets, with at least 2 or 3 at every aid station -Gels were available on at least 3 occasions -Lots of medical personnel -Free Jimmie Johns at the finish Cons: -I would like to have seen Gatorade available at every aid station, or at least every station in the second half -Not the greatest fan support -There wasnt too much happening at the finish line. I basically just grabbed my medal, some food, and headed back to the hotel for a nap. Summary: This is a fast course and a well-organized race. Amenities were fantastic and Indianapolis is a wonderful city. Highly recommend!

Good marathon with great potential

This is my second consecutive year running this race (I also ran the half back in 2009). I feel like this marathon has hit a crossroads of sorts; it is a very good marathon, with the potential to be a great marathon, but only if the race directors tackle a number of issues. While the course layout is great - mostly flat, fast, through some beautiful and interesting parts of the city - it is also very dangerous at times. The race directors simply must address the traffic issues. The stretches of the race on Fall Creek, College Ave, and North Meridian are simply too unsafe, and sooner or later a runner is going to get seriously injured by one of the impatient motorist who cut through the marathon course. If they can't afford to cut off the intersecting streets, then they will need to redesign the course. Also, the post race issues continue to plague this race. Poor food selection. Not enough food. Somewhat disorganized post-race area. I don't see why, four years in, they still can't get this right. Crowd support is pretty good at times, non-existent at others. But that will grow with the race. I'm from this area, and really want to see this race grow and be successful. I think it had the potential to be a great mid-level fall marathon, on a par with Columbus, for example. The weather is fantastic, it's perfect for a BQ. I just hope they can iron out the ongoing issues, especially the traffic/course issue. P.S.: I downgraded the course rating due mainly to the traffic issues, and the organization for failing to address this and other issues from prior years' races. That said, the course layout is great, and the organizers overall do a great job.

Beautiful course, very well organized race!

I echo pretty much everyone else's comments about how beautiful the course was, going through the neighborhoods with gorgeous homes, and the park with the sculptures and the autumn foliage. One of the truly more scenic courses I've run. I did see cars work their way onto the course to cross it, and a friend said a person who he was running next to actually got hit by a car's side-mirror but she kept running (luckily not hurt) and the car kept driving (jerk). I hope they can figure out how to appease traffic so the course doesn't have to change. Plenty of food at the finish, I finished just over 4:00 and was handed handfulls of sandwiches so not sure why some people said there wheren't any. The hot chili was great. The weather was perfect. The organization was top notch, probably the best I've ever seen to be honest. This was my 27th marathon in 14 different states. Many hotels at the start/finish. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Walking distance to the Megabus stop. I can't wait to run this one again. I highly, highly recommend it.

Well done, Flat, Midsize race

This was a very well done marathon. Packet pickup was well organized and I thought the Expo was better than average. Swag included a poster, a tech shirt and a decent medal. The hotels are all located within 2 blocks of the start and finish which make things convenient. There are multiple Courtyards and Marriotts so make sure you know which one you are staying at. There is a plethora of restaurants. I'd recommend the Bourbon Street Distillery. Nice big sandwiches and salads at a decent price. For those that like finer dining, there is a nice McCormick & Schmicks Seafood restaurant that is delicious 2 blocks from the finish. The course is pretty darn flat. A hill of 75 feet from mile 15 to 19 is barely noticeable. It takes you from the downtown area out along a busy road with architecturally interesting homes from the 1930s. The worst complaint is that the cars are noisy and there are no cops or volunteers helping the homeowners out of their neighborhoods. In general, the homeowners seemed to be patient with the endless stream of runners. This is from mile 7 to 9. Later there are some even bigger and nicer houses and the traffic is minimal (can't remember the mile markers but maybe 12-15). After than the course takes you through the Eli Lilly grounds with an Art Museum, along a nice no traffic road next to the White River (mile 19 to 20). Finally you head back into town for the final 10K. There was plenty of water and Clif Blocks. I would have liked to see more Gatorade but it was there most of the time. Half marathon runners start with the full and peel off at mile 7. The race is large enough that you are not alone and small enough that you don't feel too crowd weaving around slow people. Overall well done and no big complaints.

Terrific course, perfect weather, well-organzied!

I ran Monumental as my second marathon. I can not say enough about how well organzied and enjoyable it was. The weather in Indiana in early Nov is ideal for running - mid 30's at the start, mid 40's 4 hours later. The course was well laid out and very flat. Plenty of interesting things to look at - we ran in downtown, in neighborhoods, through campus, by beautiful historic homes as well. The size was perfect, I never felt alone or crowded. There were plenty of pace groups to choose from as well. They handed out Gu AND Shot Blocks at Gear Check (never seen that before) and at 4 times along the course. The spectators were scattered but loud. The tech shirt is nice, medal also nice. We got a stocking hat at the finish line too. I would highly recommend!

Wonderful fall run

This course is flat and takes you through all the highlights of the city. The area around Fall River Creek was in the height of seasonal color. Course organization and support were top-notch, honestly better than Chicago, with medical tents at each of 19 water stations and additional staff riding bikes in between stretches. Very generous with Gu and shot blocks. There were no spectators to speak of, but lots of people in stopped traffic offered cheers or horn honks and each water station had encouraging volunteers. I in no way felt cheated to have not gotten into NYC this year. Awesome.

This Marathon will grow in numbers.

This was marathon #8, including Boston, Chicago and others. I give this marathon high marks, and would recommend it to others. Pros: Flat & scenic course. Not quite as flat as Chicago, but only a few small rollers. Hydration at nearly every mile plus 3 spots for Cliff shots and blocks. Logistics are very easy in Indy with many hotel options, restaurants and bars very close to the start/finish/expo. Cons: Crowd support is not great, but I would expect that to increase as the race grows. Second half can get a little sparse on the Full course, but I also expect that to change as the field size grows. The weather is cool, course is flat, not too big, not to small - this is a good fall option in the Midwest.

Great medium-size race!

Exceptional weather. A great course, with several small hills at 15-19mi. Best if you have similar hills on your training route. Plenty of fan support. Agree with other comments: some of the foods ran out, but I had my share. Loved the warm chili & mini-sandwiches aside from the standard fare. Only thing missing was beer, but I remedied that soon after-wards. My wife who ran the half said there was a human-jam at the finish because the area cannot accommodate all the runners finishing at 2:15. Organizers should enlarge the finish area for the half.

Well organized & Friendly

The course was very scenic and flat. Majority of streets were nicely paved but there were several potholes in areas. The volunteers were great and I couldn't believe all of the great food and freebies at the finish. I got a nice winter hat and was even offered 5 Hour Energy drinks. My only complaint was that there was no formal pictures taken at the finish, which I am used to. It would have been nice to have one taken after the run, with my glasses off, etc. Overall this was an excellent race and I would recommend it to others.

Room for improvement

The IMM was OK but not great. There's definite room for improvement and given the enthusiasm of the Marathon Planning cadre, I'm sure it will get there. THE GOOD: The pasta dinner was delicious and the tech shirt and finisher hat were very nice. The Marathon staff was very accessible and helpful. The volunteers on the course were absolutely outstanding. I liked the course layout as it seemed to fly by and the weather was dang near perfect. THE BAD: Advertisements for chocolate milk lined the finisher area but there wasn't any to be had. I finished in under 4 hours. I heard other people complaining that the mini-sandwiches were gone as well. The potholes and plates on the roads were dangerous. I ended up standing over and picking up a young lady who tripped on a plate in the earlier stages when the crowds were still thick. She easily could have been run over. THE UGLY: I watched several cars shoot out of side streets in the residential areas north of the river forcing their way through the runners. One almost hit a couple of us and another caused the runner in front of me to have to dodge around. This scared the crud out of me. I marked the course down to 3 stars purely for the traffic risk and the road conditions. The organization lost a star for running out of post-race refreshments. The spectators were enthusiastic but sparse and the people in cars who missed the multitude of signs out there stating that a marathon was going to be using that road on that date were, in many cases, rude. This race had the potential to be a lot better and I hope it rises to the occasion.

Indy has my vote!

This race was the perfect size. Just a few thousand runners in the full, and a fun course! I would have loved to have a few more spectators in the 18-21 mile part of the course, but they provided great ammenities for the elite runners. I'd run this race again in the future!

Great race

One of the big plusses of this race is that the course is one of the most consistently attractive of any I have run. No adding on miles by going through industrial wastelands...this race takes you through historic neighborhoods, mile 17 takes you through the Butler University Campus and at mile 19 you're running through the Lilly Estate on the grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. During a long, wooded stretch where there's virtually no crowd support, they post signs every 1/8 mile or so with trivia questions about Indiana. A nice touch that makes the miles go faster. Volunteers are very enthusiastic (especially the crazy kids from Cardinal Ritter by the 30th street armory). Crowds are thin but encouraging. Some minor criticisms: 1) Grumpy, aggressive drivers, especially in the segment on Fall Creek Parkway. I don't know how best to deal with them, but they're dangerous. 2) My partner, who ran the half, had glowing comments about the variety of food at the end. I finished the full in just under 4:30, and all that was left were apples and bagels. I would've killed for a banana. Still, this is an excellent race, and I've already got it on my calendar for next year.

Fun and fast

This is a smaller race, but still has a large race feel to it, thanks to great organization. The course itself it quite scenic and offers a variety of downtown attractions/monuments, as well as residential and park-like settings. The half marathoners split from the full course at mile 7. Heading back into town, the course re-joins with the half marathon course but they have a separate lane for the half marathoners which was helpful to avoid course crowding. There is a seeded start based on your predicted finish time. I did not feel crowded at the start and it was easy to set my pace. The spectators were not numerous, but there were a reasonable amount in the downtown area and in the residential areas. The ones that were out were great, and there were school bands as well as individual musicians playing along the course, which I thought was a nice touch. The volunteers were very numerous which made the aid stations flow smoothly. My only suggestion is to offer gatorade at all the aid stations. Around mile 23 or so, I badly needed some gatorade and they only had water. I had to go about another 1.5 mi to get some gatorade. Also, be aware that there are aid stations every 1.5-2 mi (19 stations) and gatorade is only offered at a total of 9 stations. If you prefer to drink more frequently, bring your own hydration. For the full marathon this course had a total of 4 stations that offered Cliff Shot Bloks as well as gels, which was great. Post-race food was substantial, and Jimmy John's was handing out free (small) sandwiches. The massage tent and gear check tent were well-organized as well. The t-shirts are nice, and marathon finishers get a toque as well as medal. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone looking for a PR or a BQ. The course is not pancake flat - there are definitely some hills - but I found this to help break up the monotony that the flat terrain can sometimes lull me into.

Very fast course - great organization

This was my first time at IMM and I have enjoyed it. The organization and communication from the race directors is amazing. I loved the perk of having my race progress texted to my sister who was watching for me. The weather was perfect. I search out races that will have colder weather. The spectators were thin, but very enthusiastic. Many thanks to the police officers who manned the traffic. Being a Saturday race in a large city, the traffic was heavy. Much appreciation for their help. I stayed downtown and it was perfect. Didn't use my car all weekend. Thanks for a great time!

Great Race, Great Job!!!

This was my 38th state marathon. Positive: Hydration at almost every mile, shot/block were given often after mile 13, orange/banana were given in cup, Flat course, Very nice route, Embassy suite was a block away from start/finish and let me check out at 2pm. Negatives: I really didnt see much food at finish area...I only got water and bagel. hmmm. overall I really enjoyed the race..made me think I would like to visit Indianapolis again in near future.

Organized, friendly marathon with a great course

This was my third marathon and definitely my favorite! The marathon was a great size and was well organized and everyone (volunteers, spectators, other racers) were all very friendly. The course itself was a perfect combination of downtown, quaint pretty neighborhoods, and park areas. Plentiful water and gatorade stops. Clif gels and blocks available at at least 3 stops. Volunteers were incredibly friendly and encouraging. After running Chicago in October, it was nice to participate in a smaller, less crowded race. There were not as many spectators, but the ones out there were very heartfelt, even in the chilly weather. The only complaint that I have is that the running surface for miles 22 - 24 were very slanted and at that point in the race, it was tough and a lot harder on my muscles and joints. Still, I was able to PR by 35 minutes which was a huge accomplishment! I would definitely participate in this marathon again and recommend it to anyone.

A fantastic experience!

This was my 7th marathon and one of my favorites! The course really was flat (except for two almost non-existent little hills in the later miles). The spectators were enthusiastic and the organization of the whole event was great. Usually, having to park in a big city gives my big headaches, but parking was a breeze for this race...pretty cheap, too. The shirts were even really nice! The only con I would have for the entire event was that at the finish, they ran out of chocolate milk (and I wanted some really badly), but that's it!

Great race- but the course was a little long

This was my first marathon and the scenery and the spectators along the course were great. Actually my only complaint would be that the course was at least .2 miles long.

A monumental experience

This course is run throughout the downtown and residential areas where numerous monuments and historic places can be viewed, which makes the experience very enjoyable. It is also flat and fast, and a good Boston qualifier. Plenty of aid stations throughout, although there could be more porta-potties in the first few miles, as I saw several runners stepping off along the fence lines to relieve themselves. Plenty of post-race eats at the finish line, which was located next to the state capitol building and downtown central monument, giving this race an added touch and making it true to its name. Temps are a bit on the cold side, which is typical for the Midwest in November, but the gradual warmup toward mid-morning made the experience more enjoyable for me. Medal is uniquely shaped and colored for a distinct feel and memento of this well-organized race.

Excellent Marathon

Pros: Nice, flat marathon with enthusiastic crowds. Run through beautiful neighborhoods. Good support at water stops. Excellent organization. Medal and shirts were outstanding. Hotel was two blocks from the start. Cons: Expo was a bit crowded. Pasta dinner was pricey, at $20.

I plan to run it again

Enjoyed the race - not too crowded. Felt like there were a lot of turns in the first 5 miles, but it was flat and scenic. Enjoyed the post-race stuff and the hat, and the handshake from the RD was a nice touch. Stayed downtown, which made the expo and walk to and from the race easy. Very good event - well run.

A wonderful marathon experience

I ran the IMM one month after running Chicago... and I absolutely loved it! It's not as flat as Chicago, but it was truly a pretty flat and fast course. There were a few very small inclines that were nothing to worry about in the last half of the marathon. The course winds through some very lovely parts of Indy. The organization was great. The only thing that I would improve for next year would be to have the aid stations on both sides of the street and the tables need to be much longer to avoid traffic jams and bumping. I had to stop a few times to get water due to some backup... and I don't like to stop. The crowds were nice, but of course was not as loud and abundant as Chicago. The people who were out on the chilly day were quite enthusiastic. The race director was at the finish to shake my hand... nice touch. If they did have pictures after the finish, I didn't see them. The logistics of this one are so easy! Plenty of hotels close to the start, the finish, the expo and some restaurants. I easily walked everywhere. I recommend it highly.

A well-run, flat, fast marathon

I'll sum up the pros and cons quickly: Pros: -enthusiastic spectators, although a bit thin in many places -flat, fast course -good weather (I like it on the cold side when running 26.2) -the finisher's hats were a nice touch -the 1:00 starting line glitch (things like this always seem to happen) was handled quickly and professionally. -I thought the course was scenic and nice, with many sights along the way. Not boring at all. The cons: -Rude drivers. A few others have commented on this. I saw an impatient driver nearly run over a runner; his car was swarmed by many nearby runners banging on the car. It would be a good idea to simply close off some of these areas, although that's not always logistically possible. -The expo was overcrowded and hard to navigate through, and parking was virtually nonexistent. I'd look for a better venue for the expo.

Overall it was O.K. but needs some tweaking

I ran the 5K, and while I enjoyed the run and course, I was a little disappointed that as I was finishing the finish area was still being set up and not completely ready. Also had to wait quite a while for anyone to be at the results tent. Several people, including myself, were unaware there were no awards for the 5K; however, this isn't uncommon. In general I left with the feeling that the 5K wasn't taken as seriously as the longer runs were and was added to generate money. I'm also not a big fan of starting without a mat and calculating time off of the event start.

Great tour of Indy

This is a great course. Enough turns to keep you focused and a bit flat (though there are some slight grades along the way). All of the water stops were great. It was nice to see so many support folks during the tough miles 19-26 - luckily I didn't need any help but it's comforting to know they were there. Very exciting to run in my home town.

Great City, Great Race

Everything about Indy and the race was fantastic. Tons of hotel rooms and a variety of restaurants close to the start/finish area. We were in town for 3 days and never had to get in our car. Course was flat and had enough changes in scenery to keep it interesting. Crowds got a little sparse when you left downtown. Plenty of aid stations and several gel stops along the course. Only complaint: the Colts cheerleaders were in warmup suits and not their sideline uniforms. Oh well.

Great way to see Indy!

What a fantastic marathon! I enjoyed every minute of it. Our hotel was 2 blocks from the start/finish. Perfect! My two-year-old daughter was able to run in with me from the 26-mile marker and she was treated like a star by the volunteers at the finish line. The only issue was traffic control. I witnessed two police officers nearly run down by angry drivers. Keep up the good work!

Fast, well-organized, worth running!

I really enjoyed this race, and recommend it to others. The course is exactly as advertised: flat and fast, with a few short, rolling hills. Most of the "hills" were between miles 15-20, and the beginning and end are almost pancake flat. This was my 16th marathon, and I ran close to a 3-minute PR. Nice, medium-sized field of about 3,000 registrants. I had people to run with throughout the race. The half marathon is also combined for the first 6 miles, which adds another ~5000 people or so, and then the courses combine again for the last 3 miles. I enjoyed running with the halfers, as it added some energy to the races (not a whole lot of spectators), and the route was marked and partitioned very well, so there was never any confusion or clutter. Very well organized in that regard. Weather this year was cold (below 30 degrees at the start), but calm and clear sky. Other than numb hands, it was ideal. I picked Indy over Chicago because I wanted a smaller (easier, less expensive) venue, and Chicago seems to have warm weather too often. My choice paid off! Chicago was hot this year, but Indy, being 4 weeks later, had PR conditions. This race is put on by the same folks who manage the Indy Mini Marathon. They really know what they are doing. Expo was easy to navigate, and the race started exactly on time. Nice little details like that. Aid stations were frequent, and volunteers seemed happy to be there. The heated chili tent at the finish was a great touch, especially since the day turned out to be so cold. Most of the course was scenic and/or interesting, highlighting some of the best places in the metro area. There were a few miles that were a little shoddy, but I'd give course scenery an 8/10. Very good layout. Only "cons": 1) road conditions were poor in some areas (ruts, pot-holes, etc). This is typical for the Midwest, so there's not much they can do about it, but it's worth mentioning; 2) crowd support is almost non-existent likely due to the cold weather and it being the race's 3rd year. I imagine this could improve over time. If you want big crowds, go to Chicago or NY. I actually didn't care about crowd support, so this was fine with me, but again, worth mentioning. Monumental had it all, as far as I was concerned. I flew across the country to run this race, and would do it again.

Couldn't have been any better!

An amazing race! Organization was great, the number of water stations was unbelievable, and the course was fast (as advertised). The route did a good job of highlighting the landmarks of Indy - no easy feat! Packet pickup was a little messed up, but I got there right before the expo ended, so no complaints there. If I am trying for a PR, I will definitely come back.

Fast, well-organized but boring course

Plusses: + Flat course + Superb organization, volunteers, water/Gatorade/snack tables + Good race weather + Inexpensive + Good s-shirt Minuses: - Boring course: The first and last few miles go through the city. Most of the marathon is through residential neighborhoods. Barring the part that goes through the art museum (I think that is what it was), the rest was boring (compared to Chicago). Traffic: Runners had to run on main roads, where there was traffic on some lanes, and other lanes were reserved for runners. It was safe, but it felt weird. Motorists at many traffic junctions had to wait, and some impatient ones either raced ahead, or honked. Not nice. Crowd support: Great in the city; good in pockets elsewhere Overall, I don't think I will run it again, unless my focus was only to BQ.

Fast, interesting course - definitely recommended

This was my second marathon in Indianapolis within a month - the other was the Community Health Network Indianapolis Marathon. Very different races, but both very positive experiences. The setting for the Monumental is almost 100% city/suburban, and gives an interesting and continually changing view of Indianapolis. (By comparison, the Community Health has much more of a parkland feel, and is particularly scenic in the fall.) The Monumental course is very flat and fast. No significant hills, and any slight slopes seem to be in the runners' favor (I know this is impossible for loop course). Packet pick-up at the expo was easy, even on Friday night. And getting to the start and parking on Saturday was equally painless (staying near the airport is a good alternative that can save 75% compared to the cost of a downtown hotel). Proximity of the start to the convention center was a huge bonus - runners could stay warm right up until a few minutes before start time. The 3:30 pace group leader was excellent, and had us right on target with even pacing from mile 2. Nice medal and tech shirt. Plenty of food and drinks in the heated tent at the finish, and a quick printout of finish time and splits. As this marathon continues to grow, I suggest looking at ways to improve logistics at the aid stations. They are frequent, exceptionally well stocked, and manned by enthusiastic volunteers. Unfortunately they are too short and only on one side of the road, leading to a lot of bumping and stumbling, particularly in the first 7 miles when the full and half are running together. Overall, a great race.

Great first half-marathon!

I've only been running since March 2010. This was my second event ever, and my first half. I found the event to be well-organized, the course was scenic, and the fans and volunteers were amazing. Thank you, IMM, for making my first half an event I'll always remember, and for making this a run I hope to do annually.

Loved this race.

This was a well-organized marathon on a beautiful, flat, urban course. Pros: Waiting in the cold (30 degrees) at the start was OK, as the convention center was open and warm, with good restrooms. On-course support was plentiful and spirited. Spectators seemed plentiful for a 3-year-old race on a freezing morning. Course was flat and very pretty for an urban race. Runner tracking texts helped my family find me. Nice tech t-shirt and finisher runner cap and medal. Cons: Seems like they weren't prepared for the number of runners they had. Cramped start with pacers too closely spaced for the size of the field. On-course porta-potties were always occupied. Many post-race refreshments were exhausted and providers gone when I finished at 4 hours. Expo was hard to access with downtown Friday parking. Pasta dinner was $20 - yikes. Minor snafus. Overall an excellent event.

Flat, fast course; good crowd support.

For the first time in seven attempts I qualified for Boston, so this race will always be special for me. The crowds aren't huge but they're very supportive. The course has many scenic stretches. I'd only change a couple things. First, change the start to 9:00 a.m. so the sun is above the horizon. Second, change the course layout: there are too many turns in the first three miles, so runners get bunched together and have to slow down. If you could start the race with a long straightaway (maybe heading west toward the Eiteljorg Museum), it would help even more runners set PRs.

Flat, fast, and pretty quiet!

If you're looking for a flat and fast fall marathon, I could not recommend the IMM enough. The course was beautiful and as advertised, VERY flat! This is course most people can PR on for sure. The organization was great (although I agree - the expo was entirely too crowded; it was hard even to move around inside that tiny space), and the medals AND hats at the finish line were a nice touch. This is a fairly new race, and that might explain the lack of crowd support - but I would say this is a quiet run. If you need people cheering you on from the sidelines, this isn't your race. That being said, the volunteers were awesome and very encouraging. Lastly, there does seem to be an issue with traffic. I watched the local news the night before and morning of and they were advising drivers. Nevertheless, several times on the course there were cars blocked up for miles, honking, angry, and some driving like crazy to try and get out of the gridlock (I came within 5 feet of being hit by someone attempting an illegal u-turn). Also, having the cars backed up and running means you have to run long stretches breathing in exhaust fumes. Not so fun! Overall, I felt this was a great course and a well organized race, and would definitely come back!

Beautiful and very flat course

This was my first Indianapolis Monumental Marathon. I chose this course because I wanted to run a fast and flat marathon and BQ (which I did!). This course is very fast. I also invited some of my Raleigh running club to join and there were 11 of us who showed up to race. We stayed at the Embassy Suites in downtown, which was a great location. We could walk to all the local restaurants and shops. On race morning, it was nice to have only a few blocks to walk to the start. The organization was great from the expo to the starting line. The course went through all the best parts of town and I was pleasantly surprised at mile 17 - 23 running through Butler University along White River Parkway and Fall Creek. The volunteers and crowd support were great. I loved all the entertainment. This race is a must if you want a nice-size race, great location, flat course, and great city with lots to see and do.

Great race; will consider doing it again

A very well organized race. The aid stations were well placed and well staffed. The course was as flat as advertised. I particularly liked that each mile was marked with a mile marker flag flying about 8 feet off the ground. The medal was very nice!!! The finishers' area was well staffed and there was plenty of food still available for back-of-the-pack runners like me. The only drawback was that there was a moderate amount of concrete on this course and it was very hard on my knees. This was only the third year of this marathon and I look for it to grow. I will definitely consider running this race again.

Great race! But water stops need some help.

I really enjoyed the Monumental Marathon. The course was absolutely gorgeous and the logistics were great. The shirt is very nice and the hat at the end was a great touch. My only complaint has to do with the water stops. The Gatorade was placed AFTER the water. Normally, most people drink water after Gatorade in order to dilute it. Also, they were quite cramped. I literally had to stop and pick up water off the tables more times than I can remember. But overall, it was a fantastic race... I will be back!

True to its Word: Flat and Fast

Packet pickup - easy. Don't know when the IMM will move to the disposable timing device, but hopefully soon. Expo was small but had everything you needed, if you needed anything. Weather - perfect. Bit breezy, but no complaints here. Course was awesome. Flat and fast. I always appreciate the volunteers - couldn't be a race without them. Do work on the water stops - the half-full, tiny Dixie cups of Gatorade were not sufficient. Water cups were plentiful though. Gel stops were also plentiful and appreciated. Of the 17 marathons I have done, this ranks in the top 3 overall.

Truly a great place to set your pace.

I was hoping to qualify for Boston at 3:10 but came in at 3:17, which was still a 14-minute PR. This course is extremely fast, and there are no hills. The race was well organized with clear mile markers and excellent water stops. Considering it's Indiana, the course was pretty scenic. It took you through some great places, and the fall foliage was great! The food at the end of the course was abundant and the medical staff is strong. If you get hurt during the race, you'll be well taken care of!

This race keeps getting better!

I've run this race since the inaugural event. Every year it keeps getting more and more awesome. The course is flat and fast and really shows off the best of what Indianapolis has to offer. It was very well organized and the 1-minute timing glitch that popped up for some racers was taken care of quickly. Lots of aid stations well placed along the route. The number of spectators throughout the course is increasing every year, but there are some places where they are a little sparse. However, those who came out to cheer the runners on were really encouraging this year. Finisher's hats this year were a nice and unexpected touch!

A nice fall race

This is a nice fall race and worth running to pick up Indiana or to run if you live in the region. Pros: 1). Good organization: All of the key details were covered. The course was well marked with large mile markers. Multiple water stops also had gels, bananas and other extras. There were ample course monitors and police. The post-race area included a tent with chairs and hot food (chili). 2). Good music: For a race this size the organizers recruited a large number of musicians. My favorites were the multiple drum lines from area high school bands and the sorority girls singing Disney songs (I have two little girls and thus knew all of them). 3). PR Conditions: The field is not too large and the course is flat. The crowd was small enough so I could easily get on pace and large enough to find others running my pace. 4). Perks: Runners received a medal and a hat at the finish. The race poster had all of the runners names printed in micro-type as the background. The pasta dinner was at the top floor of a downtown hotel and had a nice view. Cons: There were no real cons, but I did note a couple of areas for improvement. 1). Pacers: From what I saw the pacers were running too fast. I started behind one group that was running about 20 seconds ahead of pace for the first 4 miles. This is not unique to this race. It's a problem Ive seen at many marathons and one the organizers can't really control. 2). Tiny Gatorade cups: The Gatorade cups were a bit small. It'd be nice to have larger cups with more liquid, especially at later stops. The water cups were fine. 3). Bags for finish line food: There were a lot of little items in the post-race food and my hands were already full with the mylar blanket, my hat, and the race hat. It'd be nice to either provide small sacks or to pre-bag a selection of the food for runners to make it easier to carry everything after the race. Observations: I read about irate motorists in last years posts and they were here this year. I heard plenty of honking. My favorite was the woman who rolled down her window and yelled, "I have somewhere I need to be. Why don't you run someplace else?" The course is very pleasant. It's not a scenic wonder, but Indianapolis has more green space and more points of interest than similar cities its size.

Flat and Fast!

This course is as flat as advertised. It's well organized, and for a smaller marathon there is a lot of fan support. Water/Gatorade/porta-potty at every mile, which is always nice. I have a feeling this event is going to grow quickly. The hotels are all very close to the start/finish line too. Being in November, it's nice that the threat of heat is pretty much out of play. Great race.

An ideal small marathon

This is a very well organized marathon that provides a pleasant contrast to the madness of the majors (e.g. Chicago). You can show up 15 minutes before the race, easily find a good position at the start, and do not have to deal with congestion during the run. The volunteers are friendly, helpful, and plentiful. The pasta dinner is reasonably priced and offers a solid selection of good food. Of course, as is always the case with smaller races, spectator support is sparse in some areas, but that is not something on which I place much importance. There was a good crowd downtown at the start, which was impressive because it was in the 20s and still dark. The course is flat, straight, and ideal for a BQ. Some parts are quite pretty - though others less so. My only quibbles are that there was not enough Gatorade - several of the aid stations only had water. Additionally, the Gatorade was placed in thimble-sized cups, which made it hard to get enough without a long stop. Also, some of the bands were too loud for my taste. I don't really enjoy being blasted by heavy metal when I'm struggling to stay on my feet in the last 10K. But these are minor criticisms, and overall, I found this to be a great race. I would definitely do it again and recommend it to anyone who wants to run a pleasant race and is looking for a PR/BQ.

Well organized and great course to set PR

I enjoyed being able to walk to the start right from my hotel... and the same thing upon finishing. I would highly recommend this race to anyone seeking a very fast course. Nice tech tee and good quality finisher's medal were also provided. Plenty of hydration stations along the course and the volunteers manning them were fantastic. My only criticism, if any, is about the significant number traffic control snarls in certain areas. The cops did an awesome job, but I have never seen a race with as many active traffic areas as this one. There was one particular area were the traffic was sitting still three lanes-deep and a good mile-long. I felt bad for those people stuck in traffic on a Saturday morning.

Beautiful course; better than average crowd

This is the best of Indy for sure. It is a very pretty race course, and it took me by surprise. Many nice looks at the city, downtown, Butler, Meridian Road and the nice homes of Broad Ripple. The crowd was ok - a little better than average - but it was supportive of everyone. I think this race will get better. So great scenery, pretty well organized although it seems a little long according to my Garmin and do think tables should be a little more spaced out. Overall, I would do this race again - and congrats to Indy on a very fine marathon (one of the better ones). However, note it has a few rollers - nothing hard at all, but certainly not as flat as, say, Chicago or Phoenix. So yes: flat, but do not expect your Garmin to show an elevation change of 80 (I had about 210 gain and thought there were a few little challenges later in the race that my legs could feel).

I would run it again!

Not just because I set a P.R. and ran my first sub 3 here yesterday, but I found everything about the race to be a marathoner's marathon! The only part of the race that was a negative were the conditions of some of the roads downtown. A lot of that is probably due to the fact that there is a huge amount of construction going on because the super bowl is coming to town. From what the locals said, the whole downtown area is getting a facelift. I thought the downtown was great though... it was clean, with plenty of hotels and lots of places to eat. Race-day logistics were extremely easy, corral assignments were just fine, and the race started on time. The participants were extraordinary too. I'm from the Northeast and love heading to the Midwest. Nice job!

Great Medium-Sized Race!

The course is scenic, mostly flat, and a lot of fun. A couple of hills here and there (big-ish one at 15 miles, crazy off-ramp downhill at 30K) keep you on your toes, so to speak. Spectators are very enthusiastic, but sparse. I think I went from 17-20 miles without a single spectator. Water stations are very plentiful, but too short, causing a few traffic jams. Parts of the course run in a closed lane on active highways, so be aware. There are numerous places where a police officer is holding traffic. Some crossings got a little close. Gear check is OK, but some sort of tag for the bags would be nice - masking tape works, but not very well. Getting a handshake, and a "thank-you" from the RD at the finish was a nice treat. Nice shirt, nice medal, and a nice race hat at the finish - decent swag, indeed. Entry and hotel cost me less than entry in Chicago, so there is a lot of value. Plus, proceeds go to support Indianapolis public school programs. Looking for a fun, late-fall race? Here you go.

Very Nice Course, Great Organization

Note to race director: Thank you so much for having race-day packet pick-up. Us out-of-town 50-Staters cannot always get there early enough the day before. Please continue this tradition.

Well run race with a beautiful flat course.

I ran the 2010 marathon and had a wonderful experience. I don't consider the expo a big part of any race, but this one left a lot to be desired - very crowded and difficult to find parking (location was good though, as it's right downtown where the marathon starts). I don't understand why more marathons don't mail you your number and chip. Nice that participants had the option to pick up their bib the morning of the race. Race day was cold (30 degrees at the start), but overall, good weather for a marathon. Start was very smooth and runners tended to lineup according to their pace. The halfers started with the fulls so the first 7 miles were crowded but manageable. Spectator support was decent and there were some bands and DJ's on the course. Most of the course was very scenic and was nice having very little wind. There were some minor hills at miles 16-20 but nothing too challenging. The finishing area was well organized with lots of choices of refreshments. Finishers received a hat and nice medal. The first-aid tent had HOT chicken broth which was awesome. The recovery tent was slightly heated, which was nice with soup and soda. I stayed at the Hilton (which is only 2-3 blocks from the start and finish); if you can, stay downtown so you can sleep in a bit and head directly back after the race. I commend the organizers on a great marathon and would definitely consider returning.

Premier heartland marathon

This is a great race, and I suspect it will only get better. Flat and fast course. Not the most scenic place in the world, but not bad. Attention to detail is second to none. Runners group at the start according to pace, and there were well marked turns, neon green mile markers, tons of aid stations and volunteers, a heated finish tent with chili, and lots of medical staff everywhere. Minuses: very, very few. I'd like to see the finish re-done. Its a little anti-climactic running past the monument and capitol, and then running around the back of the capitol and finishing on some side street. Also, the spectators were well below what you would see at Chicago or something like that. That being said, I was very impressed with this marathon and expect it to quickly become a premier race. Highly recommended!

Great Race on a Fast Course

I enjoyed everything about this race, ran a huge P.R. and comfortably BQ'd. The course is as flat as advertised, fast and scenic. The race video on the website doesn't do the course justice as it is much more scenic than it appears on the video. The race starts and ends downtown and takes in some of Indianapolis' best sites with a nice mix of the city and its neighborhoods. The change of scenery - from the big, downtown buildings, to wide, tree-lined, historic streets with crowd support scattered throughout the course - really helped break it up and helped the miles fly by. There were plenty of water stops staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. Others have lodged minor complaints with the water stops, gel, etc., but I had no problems getting or finding water, PowerAde or gels when and where offered. In only its second year, I was surprised at the number of spectators who were out cheering us on. The finisher's medal was the nicest I have received. It is high-quality, heavy and the full and half finishers get different-colored ribbons and medals, which I thought was a nice touch. It is even more significant because I ran my first BQ for it. The expo was nice and, for a marathon of this size, exceeded my expectations. The runners also got a nice tech shirt. The pasta dinner was good, affordable and offered two great speakers. One was a running coach and veteran marathoner of 100+ marathons, who was leading one of the pace groups. The other was Hal Higdon. I went early to hear Hal, but the coach, who was the first speaker, was every bit as good and provided some great tips too. The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon is a well organized and run event. I have run other big races, e.g., Marine Corps and Chicago. The IMM is not as big, but every bit as good. It is a great choice for a fall marathon and a good place to B.Q. I enjoyed it and think you would too.

Where's my shirt?

Even though I pre-registered, when I went to packet pick-up on race day, they were out of shirts and said no more would be made. I always assumed that pre-registering guaranteed you a shirt unless otherwise noted. I'm having a quilt made of marathon shirts and this was a monumental race (my eighth in 43 days and 40th overall).

Flat and fast; but was it long?

Overall well-organized race. Flat with good scenery. I have two minor (and fixable) complaints: 1) Was it 26.2? My Garmin showed it at 26.66. By looking at the mile markers as against my Garmin as I ran, miles 8, 9 or 10 seemed to be long. As a comparison, my Garmin calculated 26.54 for Chicago in 2008 for a much more crowded race in which I couldn't run straight lines around many more corners than Indy. Indy should have been much closer to 26.2. This added length would have been an emotional issue had I been racing for a Boston qualifier. 2) Length of water stops: Yes, there were plenty of them. The problem was the distance to pick up a drink seemed shorter than usual, which created logjams and lots of collisions as runners jostled for drinks. This was a consistent problem - it wasn't just a couple of stops. Advice: space your volunteers out more at each stop and these will go more smoothly.

Overall great - but REALLY unhappy motorists!

The course is really flat, there were plenty of water stops with very friendly volunteers manning them, and the spectators were wonderful. My only complaint was that, throughout the course, I listened to angry motorists who had been stopped by the course and were shouting unhappily at the police officers. Those who weren't shouting had looks of disgust on their faces as the runners went by. These cars seemed stuck - there was no way for them to turn around. Did they sit there for hours? Wasn't there any way to divert them from the course BEFORE they got stuck? When you're needing a bit of encouragement during a long, long race, it's hard to listen to and see so many unhappy people.

Good first-marathon experience; wish I did better!

For my first marathon, I decided to try one where I grew up, in the Indy area. The familiar spots would help to spur me on to the finish, I thought. The expo was great. Going into the cooler running months, I wish that the tech shirt was long-sleeve, but it was nice. The course was well laid out, and not too difficult, except for some strong headwinds in the second half. Lot of water stations, but I had trouble locating PowerAde and gels, and missed the first gel station. Perhaps some banners for these items would make locating them easier. Although I ended up with severe foot pain and added another 50 minutes on my second half of the run, I still finished, and enjoyed the event. Plenty of fruit and fluids at the finish, and the medal impressed my young daughters. I will definitely be back, and am hooked into marathoning!! Great event!

Nice course but no fans and poor awards

I ran the half marathon and the course was perfectly flat as advertised. I was a little disappointed in the fact that it was supposedly certified but was quite long. I heard lots of complaints regarding this. Kudos for the excellent job having medical personnel everywhere - even on bikes on the course - and the police did a great job of controlling traffic. Not a lot of fans, but I too think that will come with time. Awards definitely need to improve though!! A $15 gift certificate to a store that you can't even buy anything online from was highly disappointing and the race director was not willing to do anything else - even a trade for another race shirt. Overall, a good experience for me, but I doubt I would go back as awards are important!!

Great Fall Marathon

Another fine job by TuxBro. The course changed from last year (in which I ran), and I think it was an improvement. The weather was great, albeit a little warm and windy in the final southbound stretch (but hey, this is Indiana in the fall - you never know what you'll get). There were plenty of water/PowerAde stops, though the second half stops weren't as well manned as the first, and at times the runners overwhelmed the volunteers (which meant slowing to wait or skipping the water). The miles were well-marked (an improvement from last year), though the Mile 7 marker sign was short, confirmed by my watch/shoe pod and the GPS folks around me. The painted mile marker on the pavement 200 meters down the road further confirmed this. The course is flat; and traffic control was good, though it was obvious there were drivers who never read the signs put up days in advance showing the traffic restrictions. The folks stopped around mile 21 must have been really upset, as they were trapped in a mile-long jam that was never going to move; there were people U-turning to escape, putting them in the same lane as the runners for a short stretch. Having a race official at the finish line shaking hands with everyone in the chute after they crossed the mat was a nice personal touch. The medal is nice, and I like that the ribbons for the half and the full are different colors (not trying to take anything away from people running the shorter distance, but I want my disheveled look to be justified). There were plenty of spectators along the course, but they were generally in clusters, leaving long sections of solitude. As the event grows, the desire to get out of bed to go see it may too. I really like this race for a fall marathon, as it is well-organized, the course is good, the price is reasonable, the website info is decent, parking is easy (garages were $5, or surrounding streets free - short walk; I arrived one hour before the start, parked north of the finish area, and walked barely more than a quarter-mile), and for me it's very close to home. I will run this race again.

Flat course

The course is flat and scenic. With all of the nice communities we ran through, it felt as though I was running through my own neighborhood. The only negative was the annoying 4:00 pace leader. She wouldn't quit yelling. Other than that, I will be back next year.

I liked this marathon.

Seemed well organized from beginning to end. Course is flat - no question there. Good traffic control. Appreciated having pace groups available. There was some wind in the latter half of the race, but it didn't seem as bad to me as some others have noted. Nice tech shirt, nice medal, and a good pre-race pasta meal provided by a restaurant-type location rather than a banquet room kitchen. If you haven't been to Indy, there are some interesting things to see and do there. Start with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Wish I would have had the time to go to the Colts game the next day. Anyway, I'd recommend this run to anyone.

Pleasant Suprise!

I chose this race because of the flat elevations and to check Indiana off of my list. The video on the course website does not do the race justice. I expected it to be an ugly run, and it was anything but. Pacers were great, as were the medal and tech shirt! Weather was awesome, except for the strong headwinds that wore me down and slowed me down. But it's a marathon. It's meant to be challenging. Thanks for a great race; I look forward to running it again sometime!!!

Great course for PR or BQ; flat and fast

I was very impressed with the course and organization of the race. There were plenty of water and PowerAde stops. I was also impressed the number of GU stops. Plenty of porta-potties throughout the course made it easy to find an empty one around mile 14 and still keep with the 3:30 pace group. The 3:30 pace group leader, Tony, was outstanding! Dead even splits through the 24 miles I was able to stay with them, and plenty of encouragement for Team 3-3-0. Thanks to Tony and the rest of the group, I made my PR and BQ despite falling off of the pace near the end. The scenery at some portions was very pretty, especially in the last 10 miles, and there was no portion that went through any rundown or industrial section. The running lanes at some points were narrow and some runners had missteps with traffic cones and potholes (particularly in the first six to eight miles... I should know, as I took a tumble around mile three on a cone; next time I'll pack my ninja-like reflexes). The t-shirt and medal were first rate. Finishing with three black toes, I also appreciated that the finish was only a few blocks from the start, which shortened my walk back to the car.

Great Event

As a previous runner mentioned, the conditions were tough (strong headwind on the second half of the course). I hit the wall at about mile 22 and stumbled in to finish quite a bit slower than expected. The course is remarkably flat. The organizers did a great job with the event. Water/PowerAde stops were well staffed with enthusiastic volunteers. Post-race pasta was good. There weren't a lot of spectators along the course, but this is only the second year of the race. I expect it will continue to grow in popularity. People were very friendly and helpful. Other than my disappointing performance, I have no complaints. I highly recommend the Indy Monumental for a fall marathon.

Pretty impressive, Indy!

Monumental had a good, flat course, going through some pretty areas. The organization was a little lacking: the expo started a bit late as they scrambled to get everything in order (shirts not there by opening time); and the post-race stuff was also not too monumental - I saw NO fruit when I got in around five hours, except for a table that looked like it might have had fruit at some point, on account of the banana peels.... There was a full meal in the tent up the street, and that was nice, but I didn't want pasta and cookies, so oh well. Course aid was great, with lots of water and PowerAde and gels! Happy spectators were cheering throughout, and it's always nice to go through colleges - such happy, youthful energy! Weather made it a bit warm at spots, but then a bit breezy too sometimes. The rustling leaves were nice though, and in the end, it was a good and well put on race overall.

Good Race - Flat and Fast

This is a well organized fall race. I ran the full last year and the half this year. I really enjoyed the half course. It doesn't get much flatter. Good water stops and support for traffic. This event will continue to grow. The medal is one of the better ones I've received, even for the 40+ marathons I've run. Stay downtown, enjoy the city, and have an easy way to and from the race. Thanks to all of the volunteers for their hard work.

Excellent Indianapolis experience

This is a well-organized marathon that was a pleasure to participate in. The downtown start/finish/expo location is easy to access from the airport and dozens of nearby hotels. The course is amazingly flat, yet scenic, passing by major monuments, parks, college campuses, and riverside paths. There was a good and inexpensive pasta dinner the night before, with speakers. The weather was perfect throughout, except for intermittent mild winds. A good place for a relatively fast time. The only mild negative was that there were several conventions in town the same weekend, so hotels were hard to find and generally full price without late checkout courtesies.

Potentially a great November marathon

Contrary to what many experienced marathoners thought, I found this course NOT as flat as I thought it'd be - I've only run city marathons that are REALLY flat and/or have their uphill portions during the first half. I found those frequent uphills between miles 16 - 20 pretty discouraging! Running along with the cars stuck in traffic was not pleasant either. The water stations were placed fairly frequently, but cups were totally full for the first half of the course when I didn't need that much liquid (so I ended up dumping most of it), and only half full (or half empty!) during the last half when I really needed hydration! I also needed more than the Clif energy gels - bananas would've been great during the race. The post-race food was also not great - the volunteers seemed to get better food than the runners (who got the leftover spaghetti from the pre-race pasta dinner)! But considering the fact that this is only the second time they're doing it, they do deserve high marks and this could potentially become the November Midwest marathon to run as they fine-tune the race. (There were lots of positives - the race being Saturday right in downtown Indy was great, the expo was well organized, bag check-in and pick-up was fast, the wait before the race was short, lots of porta-potties were available, the early entry fee was low, etc.)

I've run for 31 years. This is in my top 3!

Hard to believe this is only the second year for this marathon. This one is put on by runners for runners. No doubt. The course is flat and fast. There is sign up the night before and the day of the race. I was signed up three weeks prior to run another one, and with a sickness in the family I couldn't go. So I happened upon this one. What luck. They don't SOAK you for signing up late like most of the big races (and some smaller ones). Very nice. At the start we were sent off running with a song over the speaker system that was very appropriate. : ) The course was beautiful and well stocked with aid stations. There were even aid people on bikes to help the injured or the cramped to try and get them on their way. They have four-foot mile marker signs with a sand bag you can see a LONG ways off (next year use two sand bags because it was windy). The finish line was well stocked with a ton of FOOD: Panera bagels, muffins, fruit AND, if you continue to go farther down to the tent on the right, you'll get a warm meal. (Spaghetti and breadsticks while waiting for the awards ceremony.) Nice awards and very nice finisher medals. These people do it right. Good for them and great for us! Thanks, IMM. : )

Excellent Fall Marathon

I was pleasantly surprised with this marathon. I liked how there was not a relay and there was a nice balance between half folks (who split around Mile 7) and full marathoners. It was also just the right size for me - not too big. The course seemed to really highlight some pretty parts of the city and included some local high spots such as the football stadium, art museum, and some local colleges. Fan support was good but not overwhelming. Since it looped through downtown a couple of times, it seemed like that was a great spot for fans to congregate. Shirts were nice (for whatever that is worth) and expo was a good size. Weather could not have been better for running, and the host hotel was very accommodating. Really, everything was near perfect on this one - the organizers did a good job, and the city clearly stood behind this marathon (despite a few angry motorists stuck in traffic). Good job, and I'd recommend this for a nice fall marathon that is well organized and easy to travel to.

Good fall race

I had a really rough day running my slowest marathon time ever, but I still enjoyed the race. The expo before was the best one I have been to so far. The course was really nice. I liked having the half marathon split off from the full at about Mile 7. My only problem was the understaffed water tables during the first miles of the race. The volunteers were working their hardest, but they could not get water to all the runners fast enough. Also, their race t-shirts come in women's as well as men's sizes, which I thought was nice.

Fast course; good time in Indy

I have run about 30 marathons. City marathons don't get much flatter. This one appealed to our group because it was run on Saturday, giving most of us a chance to stay in town and "party" after the marathon was over. The race starts and ends downtown near many good hotels and restaurants. Due to the 8 a.m. start, traffic control was a concern and there were areas where lines of cars were held to allow runners to pass. Water stops were numerous but not well attended, possibly due to an insufficient number of volunteers. Perhaps that will improve with time. We enjoyed the weekend in Indy and you probably will too.

Superb event. Congrats . Personal Best for me.

This was my second marathon after running Chicago a month ago. After narrowly missing Boston qualification time of 3:15 in Chicago, I chose this course for its flat course and great feedback from 2008 runners. I turned in a personal best of 3:13:46, so Boston, here I come! The race conditions were near perfect, sunny and in the low 50's. Although, the 20 mph winds were challenging on some of the straights. I would have liked to see a 3:10 pace group for those hoping to qualify for Boston as I went out like a hare for the first half and clocked in at 1:32, which was too quick a pace for me - and I felt the pain in the last six miles and my laps showed it. The fastest pace group was 3:30, run by Chris, who was only too willing to try and help me hit my goal. Staff were great. The police and volunteers did a good job with cars trying to get on the course. I saw one car ignore a race volunteer and it interrupted a couple of runners. Great reception at the end, with real nice medals. Some runners said the course ran longer than 26.2. My Garmin 405, which is usually accurate, finished the run about .5 miles before the finish (with a time of 3:11). Anyway, I recommend this highly if you want to set a personal best. This can only get bigger with time and more marketing. Great job, Don Carr and team.

A Really Good Race

I did the half, and this race is true to the advertisements. The course is flat, and because it starts and finishes in downtown Indianapolis, it is easy to access, especially if you are staying anywhere downtown. The expo is very small, but the information is well laid out on the website, so there are no surprises in this race. I thought the food in the finisher's area was a bit skimpy, but all in all, this is a good race with a great medal. If you need a good Indiana race, I would highly endorse this one!

This marathon is excellent for those looking to take a shot at Boston or just run a nice marathon in the fall. Course is rolling to flat and is scenic. Great for a first time!!!!

This was my first marathon. I thought the course and the race were wonderful. The reason the course got four stars instead of five is because of the section between 21-26; it was a straight line, with no elevation change or turns. It got very old very fast. Having said that, I saw and ran part of the new course, and it's faster and more fun. I look to have a great time this next year and I like the new portion. I wish the expo were bigger. In fact, I wish there were an expo. I think the reason there weren't a lot of fans was because this was a first-time event. Simple as that. It was poorly publicized, so there were a lot of drivers who were kept from going to work and verbally took it out on the runners. I think things will be different this year.

Great race but huge t-shirt!

This was a top-notch event and a great alternative to NYC, Chicago, or Philly. I only have two complaints: 1. The tech shirts, though nice, were gigantic. My "small" shirt was larger than most large shirts. Please find a style or vendor with more accurate sizing! Or perhaps offer women's sizes. I am sad that I can't wear my Monumental Marathon shirt because it is far too big. 2. The DAG timing system is not reliable. ChampionChip is better! Still, that is my only quibble. Kudos to KLA for a great inaugural event.

Hometown proud

As an inaugural event, expectations can be low, but even discounting some hometown bias, this one exceeded them all. I highly recommend his race. Course: Mostly flat and fantastic, from the beautiful downtown area, to stately homes in old neighborhoods, to Butler University, where we were accompanied by carillon music and screaming coeds (OK, it's not Wellesley, but it was nice nonetheless), to the park-like setting of the art museum. Organization: I don't like the DAG timing. My running buddy's gun and chip times were identical (when they should have been about a minute apart). As a result, he missed a BQ by about 20 seconds. Because he had already qualified, it didn't make much difference, but it makes you wonder how many others had similar issues. I didn't have problems with walkers, as others did, but I would recommend pace signs so runners (and walkers) could start with others of their pace. And while others didn't like going into the Statehouse for the post-race meal, I thought it was a great way to show off a gorgeous building. The security check was no big deal. I would only recommend some seating be put up. We ate on the steps outdoors, but you can't always count on temps in the 60s in November. Traffic control was exceptional for runners, but lousy for autos. The only suggestion to ease that would be a Sunday race, but without knowing the Colts' schedule well in advance, that would be hard to do. Fans: I anticipated spectators to be merely friends and family, so I was pleasantly surprised by the numbers. Not huge, but quite vocal.

Nice job for an inaugural race

I have done a number of first-time marathons and was very impressed with the overall quality of this one. Very nice job with the course. Liked having plenty of aid stations since the weather was unseasonably warm. Lack of Gatorade didn't bother me, but you need more clarity in the instructions about where it will appear on the course. I've certainly experienced more chaotic race starts. While not the smoothest start, the race was small enough that it was no big deal. Excellent job with the traffic control and since we had to cross so many intersections that was important. I did almost manage to get run over by a cyclist, however! Would have liked some sort of expo at the packet pickup. The fee seemed a bit high for what we got compared to some other marathons, but perhaps we needed to pay extra for the police presence required to stop all the traffic? Anyway, I plan to return and am looking forward to continued improvement in this race. But nice job on the first one!

Great course; great city; start could be better

This was my first marathon, and maybe it was my inexperience, but the start seemed to me a little disorganized, compared to the half-marathons I have done in the past. With the half and whole marathoners starting together, there were no pace markers at the starting line and I didn't know where to line up in the pack. Turned out there were a lot of walkers who started at the front, which made for a slow first mile. Other then that, the course was perfect and flat, we ran through beautiful areas, the weather was perfect, the water stations were adequate, and the spectators were spaced out appropriately. A Very Fine Inaugural Marathon!

Inaugural Indianapolis Monumental Marathon Indianapolis, IN Saturday, November 1, 2008 8:00 AM I flew into Indy on Friday, ran the marathon on Saturday morning, and returned home on Saturday evening. As the plane was landing, I could see the new airport, which was scheduled to open on November 12. I stayed in Hilton Garden Inn, within a short walking distance from the packet pick-up as well as start and finish of the marathon at the state capitol. We enjoyed a very nice sunny morning to run a very well organized marathon. Temperature ranged from high 40s to high 60s. In spite of some inclines around the middle of the route, I think it is a PR-type course, especially the last 10K. We shared the first 6.5 miles with half-marathoners. We ran through downtown, several residential neighborhoods, Butler University, Museum of Art gardens, and it felt as if I saw most of the city! Traffic control was very good, as we crossed several major roads. Either some stuck-in-the-traffic drivers were annoyed by the runners or cheering us on by non-stop honking! There were pace groups. There were ample water/sports drink stations. The sporadic crowd support was fairly good. There were plenty of refreshments at the finish. The technical short-sleeved race T-shirt was nice and I liked the high-quality finisher's medallion. Although glitches are expected in inaugural marathons, I didn't notice any and congratulate the organizers for a very fine and pleasant running event. I am a 50-stater and this was #44.

Very good inaugural event

I am glad this inaugural event went well, and hope they continue and grow in the future. Although I really wasn't well prepared for this event I did it anyway (just very slowly) because I wanted to be a part of the inaugural event and perhaps do it every year. The good: - This was a well organized event; no real problems were encountered, which is great for a first-year event. - The crowd was very vocal and enthusiastic. It was really appreciated. - There was some good music that was well-placed on the course. - Nice medal. - Nice short-sleeve tech shirt in the goody bag. - Very good course support, plenty of water, Gatorade, and some things like GU and hard candy. - The course really took us all over the city. It is a very nice city and this was a great way to see it. - The police did a great job with traffic control; they were holding up some major roads. The bad: - The course was pretty good, except the long stretches of open road. It was a pretty cool day. If it was any warmer, those long open stretches would have been a nightmare. - There were not enough porta-johns on the course. After the full split from the half, I didn't see a porta-john for about 10 miles. In talking with others on the course, I think I missed one just after the split, but there was a huge stretch with none. - There was no expo (which is actually OK with me), but packet pickup was inside the state house, which meant we had to go through a security checkpoint to get to it. They should have held the expo/packet pick-up in the government building next door. It a larger area and there was no security checkpoint to go through. - The post-race meal was also at the statehouse, so again runners had to go through security to get to the food (I didn't bother because the line at security was too long). - There wasn't enough room at the start line. Runners were lined up to a point where there was a busy road where traffic was not stopped. - The DAG timing system sucks! It fails way to often, especially when multiple people cross the line at the same time. I know my time didn't get recorded correctly at the start. It took me about 5 minutes to get to the start line and my official time suffered accordingly.

Great marathon!! Especially for an inaugural!

What a pleasure it was to run this race! The course was great! It wound through some interesting parts of town, some beautiful neighborhoods, and for the most part was very flat. There were just enough elevation changes to give the muscles a break. The course was oriented primarily north-south, so the early morning sun was never a problem. The only mark I have against the course is the very long, straight stretch back into downtown from mile 21 to mile 25.5. The race support was very good. Water stations were a little too frequent in the first 10 miles and a little spread out in the latter miles, but overall they were well stocked. My only suggestion would be to move the people handing out gel so they are 0.1 to 0.2 miles before the water station... it's difficult to grab a gel, get it down, and grab a drink when the gel is in between the water and Gatorade tables. Race organization was good. Pre-registration was easy, communication was good, and on-site packet pickup was quick and easy. However, if you were expecting any kind of "expo," it was a disappointment. The sponsoring hospital had a table giving out fleece ear-warming headbands, but that was the ONLY thing to be picked up other than fliers for some other races. Fan support was really impressive, especially for a first-time race! There were plenty of cheering people downtown and lots of residential support... families and block parties were cheering, little kids lined up for high-fives, and there were impromptu street concerts and cranked up stereos. And while the race was relatively small, there were always other runners around, so it wasn't like you were out there on your own. Super job! I already have November 7 marked on my calendar next year as a possible repeat attempt at a BQ.

One of the fastest marathon courses

I was looking for a fast course to qualify for Boston, and this was the one! A few grades past the halfway point but flat otherwise. Carlton Ray and Ken Long are to be congratulated for the beautiful course and excellent organization. Carlton shook the hand of every runner at either packet pickup or the finish line. I don't know how you could find a more scenic route in Indianapolis. Truly monumental as we ran past the Lucas Oil Stadium, the Murat Shrine, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, many spectacular churches, the many war memorials along Meridian Street, and the finish at the state capitol building. Follow that up with a free spaghetti lunch after the race and it just doesn't get any better!

Hard to imagine a better first-time race

I was stunned at how well this was pulled off for a first-year event. I live in Indy and usually do the Detroit race each fall. Family scheduling made that a no go this year... and this was created, so I stayed here and did the half. It went off without a hitch. Better than I hoped. it started on time, had good support, etc. I think they made the right choice to limit how much they did to ensure that it went off well. What I mean is that they did not try to work in a big expo. They did not try to work in corrals (more on that in a minute). They focused on getting it right and then let it grow. The weather was perfect... but that is hit and miss and out of anyone's control, though I do think early November is better for the Midwest than mid October. The 13.1 course was GREAT. I loved it. Showed different things in our city. Things to add in coming years (and again, these are not complaints as I think they did the right thing not to do these in year 1): Better shirts - with a year or date on them. People care about that. Automated clocks at miles, not a person calling out times. More entertainment on course. Keep the text messaging - great touch. One complaint (not for me, but for non-runners): They needed to do a better job of getting out the road closures next year. A lot of drivers were mad and at the end of the day this makes them hate runners. Count me in for this year from here on out.

Spectacular inaugural event!

One of the best marathons I have run! Great organization, beautiful course, and very friendly runners and spectators. Water stations were very plentiful. A couple of hills, but overall flat. I will definitely do this one again - and I highly recommend it!

Great for a PR

Fantastic inaugural marathon: beautiful, flat course; numerous aid stations (needed more Gatorade toward the end of the route, though); and great volunteers. More spectators than I expected for a first-time race, and some music on the course. The organizers did a great job. If they keep this up, it will develop reputation for Boston qualifiers.

good inaugural race

I was worried about running an "inaugural" race, but the organization was great. The course was much more scenic than I had expected, and the crowds, although somewhat small, were consistent throughout the course. I really enjoyed the run. I would recommend that they have Gatorade at each water stop. No expo was a surprise, but the guy at the Runner's Company stayed open late for me to go get some GU - thanks, man!

U+IMM=BQ

I had a great time in Indy! This course is FAST!! There was only one small hill that was just past the halfway point. The rest of the course was flat or slightly downhill. If you want a PR, you can do it here. I stayed at the Marriott, which was half a block from the start line, and just around the corner from the finish line. I didn't even need to check a bag. If you are looking for a race that is set up for a PR, IMM has it. If you need thousands of people to cheer for you, a large expo to dazzle you with discount closeout running gear, and bite-size samples of the latest energy bar, go somewhere else. As for petty gripes of why IMM was not perfect, I'm not going to do that. Read the other comments. Thanks, IMM, for putting on a good show. I'll be back next year with friends.

Nice small marathon - no frills but a great run

Good event. Not too crowded start or finish. Flat course with long straights. Moderate fan support and very friendly people. The timing device was big and stapled to the bib number. I like the idea of a disposable timing chip but this was a bit cumbersome. For the most part the course was easy to follow, but towards the end I was running alone and was unsure of direction around mile 18-20. I ran through one intersection where the officer never stopped the traffic; I think he just didn't see me, but fortunately, the drivers saw me. The half marathoners broke off early and rejoined the marathoners near the end of the race. The run lanes were divided, which kept me from having to dodge walkers. This would be a good course for those trying to reach Boston or run a PR.

Not bad for the first time!

Being that this was an inaugural race, it wasn't bad! The weather cooperated, there were plenty of hotels near the start and finish, the course was beautiful and tree-lined (with fall foliage), there were a reasonable number of porta-potties beforehand and on the course, and I would recommend this as a race to check off Indiana if you're going for 50 states. However, there were some areas for improvement or things to be aware of: 1. I registered and got a confirmation back via e-mail, but didn't show up on the website as being registered when I checked later. Somehow my registration got lost! So check to make sure you show up as registered, even if you get a confirmation back! 2. I sent an e-mail to the race director a few days before the race asking if there were any shower facilities available. I wasn't sure if I could get late hotel checkout, and the 8:00 a.m. start is sometimes a challenge in getting cleaned up afterward. I got a prompt response back to check at the "ask me" desk at packet pickup, which I did. The woman there chuckled like I was crazy and said, "No, there aren't any shower facilities." Fortunately, my hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) did allow late checkout, but be aware! 3. The packet pick up and post-award ceremonies are in the state capitol. What that means is that you need to go through security screenings every time you enter. Kind of a pain. Couldn't they have these events at a hotel or the nearby convention center? 4. They used the "chip in your bib" technology, which is somewhat antiquated and I'm not sure it was totally accurate (I know my half marathon split was off by a couple of minutes). I'm also pretty sure some of the mile markers were a little off. 5. They made it clear that clock time (not chip time) would be used for all awards (even age group). I think this helped add to the congestion at the start, where people definitely over-placed themselves. They also did not have clear pace markings, so you knew where to stand, and MANY walkers placed themselves right up in the front. You can see this in the results, when you look at the people who finished in 6 hours or so, but their chip time and clock time are the same. I suggest they put a big sign up for "WALKERS" to guide them to the appropriate starting position. 6. Maybe I missed it, but the only food I saw post-race were bananas and bagels. Kind of meager, but maybe I'm spoiled by recent races. 7. The results were posted in the capitol (again... security screening, including taking off your finisher's medal so you could go through the screening), and were VERY hard to read. With the small font and no age group award postings, it was a mess. I finally just went to the award desk and asked if I was in the top three in my age group. That should be fixed, if only to make it easier on the race director! So, I really don't want to be overly critical. The race did start on time (sometimes a problem with inaugural races), I had no problems with the aid stations (except the Gatorade seemed limited), and there are always those wonderful volunteers and spectators! I just loved the guy who shouted, "Only 5 more miles" at mile 21... he meant well!

Good event... I'm sure will only get better

Overall, good for the inaugural event. I assume the years to come will only get better as the race coordinators seemed very committed and enthusiastic. I finished in just under 4 hours, and I found the water stations to be very well stocked. Great finishing medal. Spectators were sparse, especially throughout the neighborhoods, which is where runners really needed the support. Downtown area was great. Large number of hotels to choose from and things to do after the race. My biggest complaint was that they didn't have the running time posted on/by each mile marker. Also, both the text I received after the race as well as the email I received with results were both different and incorrect; results posted online were accurate, though. I'm sure they will work through these things for future races. Overall, good for a smaller-sized marathon.

Organizers need to work out the kinks.

Race-day number pickup is a big plus for a Saturday race. Gear check was convenient and easy. Plenty of port-o-potties. The lack of a clock at the start line is inexcusable, since there is no way of figuring out your differential between the gun time and chip time for those running without a watch. Not that it mattered on the course, as there was only a clock at the halfway point. Split times were called out rarely and sporadically (miles 3 and 6) at mile markers that seemed slightly long on my GPS during the first half. Mileage got more accurate as the race got into the later stages. Pre-race info listed Gatorade and gel at water stops, where neither were available; other stops had either or both where they were not expected (welcome nonetheless!). Big gap (~ 2 miles?) without a water stop in the early 20s. That late in the race, Gatorade is welcome/necessary at all stops. Race volunteers were gracious/excellent, but it seemed like organizers didn't have enough to meet their needs. Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee has an arrangement with a local YMCA for runners to use their showers after the race; a similar arrangement here would be nice. Great course, but the middle isn't flat. Great spectators, especially the band playing in the front yard around Washington and 52nd. Police who were blocking traffic along the route did a superb job holding cars back for runners and letting traffic through as possible. In sum, the Monumental Marathon is a good place to run, but organizers need more clocks (especially one at the start) and more Gatorade on the course, especially towards the end.

A very good inaugural effort.

I ran this race as a pace leader and in general was quite pleased with the level of organization. There was some awkwardness with the start area: staging, toilets, and bag check were in front of the start rather than behind, which made the flow a bit weird. A few of the mile markers seemed to be off by quite a bit, which didn't help with the pacing effort, and there should have been Gatorade available at every stop rather than just sporadically. But the course was nice and had enough roll to it that you had to think a bit. There were not a lot of spectators, but those that were out were fairly enthusiastic, plus our pacing group was its own support. Volunteers were helpful and patient. Traffic control was great for the runners, but I suspect that were a lot of ticked off motorists in Indy on Saturday. The finisher's medal is nice. There is a lot Ken Long and Associates can work on to improve this race, but it has a lot of promise. I can see this becoming a destination race.

A race that defines Indianapolis

Indianapolis has a lot of road races that are well-organized and fun, but we've never had a race that truly sums up the Circle City till now. I loved this course: It runs through the historic parts of town during the first half, and saves the best part - running through the art museum's grounds - for the second half, when you need a lift. The weather was perfect, I liked the size (~1,000 runners, enough to keep you company but no problems with too many people on the course), and the parking and packet pickup were easy. It's a pretty flat course, but the scenery varies from Lucas Oil Stadium to the gorgeous mansions on the Old Northside to a pretty little subdivision called Arden to the aforementioned art museum. It was great to have the end coming down Meridian, too - you can see the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in the distance, urging you on. Ken Long and the race organizers have finally created a city-defining marathon that Indy deserves. (I love the Indianapolis Marathon too, but it isn't in the city proper - I think they complement each other well.) If there were any drawbacks, I suppose there could have been more spectators, but then if you want New York-sized crowds, don't run in Indianapolis. I'll do this one again.

Great first race. Flat, fast course with few hills between 13-18. Scenic, shaded route. I had plenty of water and Gatorade. I also carried my own gels with me. More spectators than I anticipated. Better traffic control would be the only improvement.

A Star is Born

Great first effort for the Indy Monumental Marathon folks. This race has a lot going for it, not the least of which is the fact that it is run on a SATURDAY. I drove from Cincinnati on race morning, parked 100 yards away from the start line for 5 bucks, walked a block to the beautiful state capitol building, and paid my entry fee and got a technical shirt with good graphics. Even the sponsor logos on the back were in multiple colors, so they spent some cash on the shirts. The weather was perfect, but I could imagine the nice, warm capital building being a great shelter for everyone to hang out in on future dates before the race if the weather is cold or if it is raining. This race was fairly lacking in the music/crowd support/excitement department, but that can be worked on. Seemed like they forgot the porta-potties out on the course in long stretches too. This city is built for a fast race, with its flat terrain and grid street pattern. The Monument Circle area is very dramatic and one of the best points of interest I have seen on a marathon course. The finish line is one of the better I have experienced as far as the logistics. You finish on a public square between two rows of buildings. You get about 150 yards for your moment of glory after you turn the last corner. They announce your name and where you are from. Once again, no music or hoopla, but still very nice. Someone that I am sure I was supposed to recognize shook my hand at the finish. The medal was top-notch and is one of my favorites. The space blanket, water and food are right behind the finish line and you don't even have to wait for someone to cut off your timing chip because it is disposable and on the back of your bib. The capitol is at the far end of the finish area and my car was less than 5 minutes away. Once the word gets out more about this marathon, it could become one of the fall classics. Even though the crowds were not out to cheer, I applaud the Indy Monumental Marathon and its volunteers. See you next year.

Flat, Fast, Perfect Weather

I did the half this year in hopes of doing the full next year. I have done many Ken Long events and have always been impressed with their organization and support. The course (especially the half) is flat and the weather on race morning was perfect (50 degrees and little wind). My one gripe is the packet pickup, and the statehouse in general. Packet pickup on Friday afternoon in downtown is a pain between the traffic and limited parking around the statehouse at this time. Hopefully, KLA can utilize the convention center or one of the downtown hotels for pickup in the future. Post-race area at the statehouse can be a hassle, with the security check and the steps to climb on sore legs. I do not want to park for $5 for a 5-minute packet pickup, and I'm too tired to rob anyone after running a half/full marathon, so the security clearance to get in the statehouse post-race on a Saturday is pretty silly.

GREAT inaugural race

Nice flat/fast course with fabulous weather (45 or so at start). I set a 3-minute PR! I would recommend more aid stations with Gatorade, and either have volunteers yelling what's in the cups or have signs for water/Gatorade. Running through the art museum grounds was nice but confusing, as no one was directing runners. Otherwise, it was a very nice race. I would run it again for sure.

Really fun course for a half marathon!

I have done the Indy Mini twice, and six other half marathons, and this one is right up there! I really liked the course: beautiful neighborhoods, monuments, Lucas Oil Stadium, etc. Spectators were there to cheer us on. Aid station volunteers yelled out which cups had water/Gatorade. I wasn't crazy about going to downtown Indy to pick up my packet, but truthfully, I have lived in Indiana for 59 years and have never gone into the state capitol building. The weather was fantastic. Only complaint: some mile markers were hard to see, and I would have liked something besides a banana and bagel at the end. Great medal and technical shirt! Well organized... thanks, Ken and group!

fun, fast and flat - and spectator-friendly

The course was nice and new, but the walkers should start earlier, or at least they should be put in the back of the lineup. Not all aid stations had Gatorade; medical areas were hard to find; spectators were great; course patrols were good and alert; they had nice start and finish locations; and they chose a scenic route. It's a good time to run in Indy.

For a maiden marathon, it was very well done. The water stations were plentiful and the people gracious. The course is nice and flat. Fast, Scenic Course

This course was well thought out with the many downhill stretches in the second half of the race. This was my first negative split marathon (1:37, 1:33) and a PR by 35 minutes, and a Boston qualifier!!! The field was small (~1100), but the community support was present all throughout the charming neighborhoods. The expo was low-frills, but the medal and shirt were very high quality. Also, being able to stay at a hotel 200 yards from the start/finish line was sure nice, especially since I was able to book it one week before the race. Downtown Indy has great places to carbo load the night before as well.

Spectacular

This was my first marathon and the weather could not have been better. The course was very flat except for a little hill at mile 15. Good crowd support in the neighborhoods. Downtown area was wonderful. The only problem was that one water stop ran out of cups. They needed more water and porto-johns toward the end of the race. Very pretty course. Good for a first marathon; there were 1,100 finishers in the marathon.

Monumental marathon without a doubt!

November weather in the Midwest can be very unpredictable, but today the marathon gods shined on their debut event. It was 50 degrees at the start, with light winds. Our group of three had two running the marathon and me running the half. The course was as advertised, flat and fast. Plenty of water/Gatorade stops and modest crowd support. Overall there were probably 3000-4000 runners total, which was perfect as you don't have to fight crowds, congestion at water stops, etc. My buddies running the marathon had both dropped 40 minutes from their Chicago Marathon steam bath experience, qualifying them both for Boston! They were stoked! Traffic control was handled well and there were plenty of refreshments after the race. The only area of improvement that could be made for the half-marathon: it seemed that some of the timers from miles 10-12 were not synced up. According to the times shouted out, I went from a 6:55 pace to 4:55. (I wish that could be possible.) Overall, a great marathon and half-marathon and I'd mark it down on the calendar for next year.

Flat, fast and nice urban scenery

The course preview by Carlton Ray, President of the IMM, was indeed a very accurate description. Today was my 19th marathon and I really enjoyed running through the local neighborhoods of Indianapolis. As we all know, there are very different ways of categorizing "scenery." Even though this was an urban marathon, the course took us in and around a lot of great neighborhoods, the Indianapolis Art Museum and Butler University. The architecture of the houses/buildings really kept your attention the entire course. Another thing that I really liked were the long straightaways. This made it so much nicer to see where you were going as opposed to constantly twisting and turning. As for the hills at mile 15 and 17, they are truly nothing to be concerned about. Overall, the organization was great. The water stops were plentiful and well staffed, and the local police and volunteers did a nice job in protecting the runners from the local traffic. (I will say, though, that there were a lot of traffic jams out there so I am not sure how well the media promoted this race to let the locals know of road closures/delays. Even though there were a number of drivers honking, the police did a great job of protecting the runners and letting them pass through intersections safely.) And to top it off, I set a new PR by 10 minutes to finish at 3:58:51. My first sub-4 hour marathon! I have to give a lot of credit though to my good friend, Big Mike, who set a strong pace to get me in a great position through the first 20 miles. From there it was up to me, and thankfully I was able to pull it off. Thanks, Mike! By the way, the finisher's medal is nice, with a decent weight to it, along with a printed ribbon. The tech shirt was good too. So, if you are looking for a November marathon in the future, be sure to give the IMM a try. I would like to think that you too will have a similar experience as I did today.

Ken Long races are the best

Thanks to all of the volunteers and police officers who really handled those intersections like the pros that they are. This was my 37th marathon. Beautiful day. Course is well thought-out, as even though you had full sun, you were running under a lot of trees during the day. Yes, there could be some improvements, but this was an inaugural race and it was terrific. No whining by me or any other racers allowed; this was about as good as it gets, as marathons go. This race is THE Indianapolis Marathon and finally Indiana has a premier event that could grow into something special. Thanks again, Ken!! 'Nuff said.
