Jon Cross and Jim Barahal have been fostering Honolulu's Marathon since the 1980's when they moved out of their Michigan lives and settled into Hawaii where they began their running lives. Cross and Barahal quickly climbed up the ladder of the Honolulu Marathon association and love life as the race's number one conoisseurs. They keep it a non-profit event, attracting over 5000 participants per year, and will only continue making it the hotspot in marathoning that it is today.

Grant Hirohata-Goto was a runner, cyclist, skier, gymnast, weight lifter and one of Honolulu Marathon's finishers who died last weekend for reasons that are still unknown. He was son of one of Honolulu's better known marathon regulars, and a determined athlete. As a result, Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon Association and a medical doctor, said he would recommend anyone older than 40 undertaking marathon training get a stress test on a treadmill with an echocardiogram.

Mbarak Hussein took Honolulu Marathon victory for the third time on Sunday, while Kenyan Jimmy Muindi came in second. Hussein finished the 26.2 miles in 2:12:29 seconds. Svetlana Zakharova of Russia won the women's race in 2:29:08. She also won in 1997, and finished second in 1998-01.

Kenya's Mbarak Hussein and his brother Ibraham are now tied with three Honolulu Marathon victories each. Mbarak's time of 2:12:29 in Sunday's 30th annual race however, was still not enough to beat his brother's record time of 2:11:43 he got in 1986.
