A Scenic, Well‑Organized Race Let Down by Flat Atmosphere

As I don’t usually write event reviews, I hope this doesn’t come across as overly negative or unnecessarily critical. The Zurich Marathon takes place in a beautiful, relatively large, international city with a very active sports community, and it has been established here for many years. Because of that and based on previous editions I came with high expectations. To be clear, this was not my first time running the Zurich Marathon. Every year, I tell myself that this year will be better than the last. Unfortunately, once again, I was wrong. The course itself is nice: first through the city, then along the lake with beautiful views, and finally back into the city. I also regularly run a similar, shorter 20 km route every Saturday, so I know nearly every corner, bump, and section of the course well. The event is supported by big-name sponsors, which should help with organization and the overall runner experience. To be fair, this year was better than previous ones there’s no doubt about that. The fueling program, in particular, was actually better than at some larger events, both in quantity and quality. This year also attracted many strong runners, which unfortunately led to several bottlenecks where running became difficult and we almost had to stop or walk. I hope the organizers take note of this and improve it in future editions. That said, the main reason I’m writing this review is the atmosphere or rather, the lack of it. This is what truly sets a marathon apart, and unfortunately, it felt even worse than in previous years. Large parts of the city were quiet, the crowd often seemed disengaged or bored, and there was very little consistent support from spectators along the route. I’m not comparing Zurich to major world marathons, but even smaller events in cities like Lucerne or Geneva manage to offer loud music, cheering crowds, and real energy throughout the course. I understand that this may be partly cultural, but why were there no DJs or music in central areas like Bahnhofstrasse? Yes, Vitamin Well and ON created small party zones around their areas, which was appreciated but that was more the exception than the rule. Really, one Sunday morning per year with music, cheering, and visible support for runners doesn’t seem like too much to ask for a major sporting event. Come on, Zurich. Overall, it’s a nice event with clear potential, but it’s missing small details that could make it truly great.

Zurich - you can do better!

This was my 23rd marathon, 1st one in Europe. If you are ok with no Expo, no marathon/running merchandise to see or buy and no pre-race activities, then this might be the race for you. If you like an out and back course or parts of the course repeated, then this might be the race for you. And if you like so much congestion after you cross the finish line that you can hardly move, then this is the race for you. Personally, I think the Swiss can and should do better!

Nice Marathon. PB Course

A very well organized run. Entry allows free travel before, during and after the event. I got a train from Basel- awesome. The route goes through the city and then out and back along a long stretch of the lake. Lots of support towards town but many stretches with not many people around. Plenty of aid stations with water, iso drinks and gels. Completely flat so great potential for PB/PR.
