Joseph Nderitu of Kenya dominated the field to win in a time of 2:15:50 breaking the previous course record. Bruce Deacon was second in 2:18:53. Danuta Bartoszek of Mississauga won the women's marathon in 2:37:58.9, with Edmonton's Sandy Jacobson second and Toronto's Elaine Coburn third.

Joseph Nderitu, 28, of Kenya broke away from the pack after 20 kilometers and went on to win the National Capital Marathon in Ottawa, Canada, Sunday in 2:15:50 - a record on a relatively new course and the fourth fastest time in the event ever. Danuta Bartoszek of Mississauga won the women's marathon in 2:37:58.9, with Edmonton's Sandy Jacobson second and Toronto's Elaine Coburn third.
