The men's marathon at the Pan Am Games unfolded pretty much the way Brant County coach Rick Mannen figured -- with one exception. The runner he coaches, Kip Kangogo of Lethbridge, Alt., was forced to slow down late in last Saturday's race due to cramping.

Fredericksburg resident Tim Young finished sixth in the men's marathon Saturday at the Pan American Games in Toronto. Young, a 28-year-old James Monroe High School graduate, was timed in 2:19:34. He finished eight seconds behind fellow American Craig Leon, who was fifth.

Richer Perez of Cuba edged out Peru's Raul Pachecho by nine seconds to win the men's marathon at the Pan Am games in Toronto, Saturday morning.

Leon, who completed the race in 2:19:26, was 2:22 behind Gold Medalist Richer Perez of Cuba and eight seconds faster than fellow American Tim Young, who placed sixth in the race. It was Leon's first international marathon and first race as a member of Team USA. Leon competed in, and won, a half marathon in Costa Rica earlier this month.
