The long-distance race, which has made a return to the city after a break of 20 years, saw a field of 5200 road runners and fundraisers at the start line in Birkenhead Park. The Marathon was started by LFC's Jamie Carragher, who's 23 Foundation is one of the race's four official charities. Jamie was accompanied by Andy Burnham MP at the start line, who watched runners commence their journey through 11 miles of Wirral streets before heading to the Queensway Tunnel and the Liverpool stage of the route - with the finish line located in the shadow of the Three Graces at the Pier Head.

Liverpool native John McCole made a splash in his marathon debut, taking charge of the race at mile 17, and winning the event in 2:34:00. Jenny Clague, also in her marathon debut, won the women's race in 2:44:07.

rganisers of October's RunLiverpool Marathon have announced the involvement of leading Liverpool logistics and distribution company Bibby Distribution with the event. The Duke Street based business which is part of the Bibby Line Group will assist with the handling of over 9000 runner's personal effects, transporting them from the Birkenhead Park starting line to the city's Pier Head for collection at the finish.

A growing number of celebrities have signed up to support the new RunLIverpool Marathon which is taking place in the city on October 9, with many acting as ambassadors for the event, as well as backing their own chosen charities. Famous faces In the field of 12,000 runners will include sportsmen; British Olympic gold medal winner Steve Smith, 400m British record holder Iwan Thomas, and Paul O'Neill, British Touring Cars driver.
