After helping to push the pace in the first half of the marathon, Pavel Andreev got scared that he might tire early. But, the Russian had plenty in reserve as he held on and ran away from his closest competitor in the last mile to win in a time of 2:14:31.

The defending champions of last year's Grandma's Marathon were affected by circumstances, perhaps beyond their control, as each was defeated this year. Elena Makolova, last year's female winner was hoping to represent her country in the Sydney Olympics when word came that Belarus would not send any marathoners to Sydney, and so her entry in Grandma's was a last minute decision and her training allowed only a second place finish. On the men's side, Andrew Musuva was affected by malaria contracted on a recent trip to Mexico - and he did not finish the race.

Andrew Musava, the defending champion in Grandma's Marathon couldn't hold on and dropped out at mile 20. Running with the lead pack until mile 17, Musava slowed and by mile 20 had lost contact with the leaders.
