Japan's Kenichi Takahashi started off on a record-setting pace in the Tokyo International Marathon but slowed toward the end, finishing in 2:10:50. Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia took second place in 2:11:07, followed by Dmitri Kapitonov of Russia third in 2:11:09.

Ken-ichi Takahashi won the Tokyo Marathon in a personal record time of 2:10:51. However, he was disappointed as he'd hoped for a 2:06 marathon. Other elite runners at the race this year included Eric Wainaina of Kenya, Tesfaye Tola of Ethiopia, and Tesfaye Jifar of Ethiopia.
